Mine never went off rearended a guy pretty hard with my 99. Was going about 50 mph, hit the brakes and second later, wham. The car bounced forward so I still had forward momentum. I think the sensor calculates how fast the deceleration is before blowing the bags, not necessarily how fast one is going. Heard a lot about these trucks where the bags didn't work.

My airbag light would come on quite intermittently, usually after being at the car wash or snow melting off windshield and only after the mileage was past 200,000. There was no warning lite they weren't going to work when I had two rear end accidents. No air bag light won't guarantee they are in working order.

The accelerometers that clue in the module to fire off the air bags are VERY specific when they will actually trigger. It almost has to be a dead nuts head-on collision at greater than 25 miles per hour before they will even consider it. If the collision is even at a slight angle, they won't. They certainly won't in a rear-end collision. (unless you are the one rear-ending someone....)
