Want a bigger Ram 2500?
Hello all, I'm looking at camping on a regular basis. I now have a 2001 Ram 1500 with a tow package. I haven't bought a camper yet but, I'm looking at a 22 to 26 ft camper. I would like to buy a used Ram 2500 to give me more towing ability. Would the 2500 be a good choice and what axle should I look for?

Honestly, if you want towing ability simply buying a Ram 2500 doesn't get you anywhere, after all, it'll have the same under powered 5.9L under the hood and possibly the same crappy 46RE.
If you have the funds get a 2nd Gen Cummins with a manual transmission. If you want to tow on a regular basis your wallet will thank you in the long run.
Better fuel economy when towing (and regular driving) and better reliability.

^1. The ram 2500 v8 only gives you another 1000lbs tow rating compared to the half ton. I believe the ram 2500 v8 has a tow rating on 8500ish lbs whereas the 1500 is 7500ish lbs. There isn't much difference except the suspension can handle the rated tow rating better. My advice is look for a v10 2500 or a diesel. They are both rated to tow close to 12,500 lbs.
The 2500 v8 has a Dana 60 rear while the v10 or Diesel have Dana 70 if automatic and a Dana 80 if standard. The v10 and diesel also have a 47re/rh transmission which is stronger than the 46re in the 1500 and 2500 v8
