241D, or, 241HD would be a nice upgrade. I think there are some differences between t-case of manual, or auto trans..... also, difference in those behind the v-10, or diesel.... If you go with the 241, gonna have to do some creative stuff with driveshafts too... most any 231D will bolt right in, and hook right up. You want a t-case from a 98 or newer truck to match the shift pattern though.

so the 231 out of a dakota should work as well im guessing? how much of a difference would there be in driveshaft lengths if i swapped to the 241?

Couple inches I think..... several folks have done that swap.

Also, if you are feeling froggy, the NV242 is a viable option as well. Also has a 'full-time' FWD option. (basically, AWD.)

What is the output spline count for the nv3500? I think I confused with nv4500, which will impact transfer case.

Edit: answer found here https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ml#post3197043

Specifically 98 1500 318 with nv3500 trans and np231. Np231 behind auto and manual are NOT direct swaps.

at most all you should have to do to make the tcase work is swap the input planetary gear set from your old tcase. they are pretty tough so it should of survived the grenading. its not hard, just time consuming. that way if there are different spline counts the problem should be solved.
