So I have a Comp Cams timing chain, brand new, just bought. It has a lot of slack in the chain (http://tinypic.com/r/2zsslsh/9). I know the Mopar Performance chains have little to no slack but the dots are wrong on the gears. Maybe the solution is to order a chain tensioner but I don't like how the chain wears the plastic tension bars and plastic grit gets into the oil.


I need help ASAP. Trying to get this back together as soon as possible.

 

I went with the Comp Cams chain and mine had little to no slack, think you might have got a bad one. I'd exchange it.

 

The Cloyes I put on mine was snug... that's about half of what my original looked like when it came off.

 

I had a Mopar Performance used double roller with about 3000 miles on it in my closet. It had just as much slack when I tested today. Is something screwed up on my truck?

I was just giving a point of reference, based on my experience.
It may or may not the norm, but I suspect a chain that ran without a tensioner would have less slack than that.
If you're going to run a tensioner, it would be OK.

 

I don't want to run a tensioner. I don't like em, the chain tears up the tension bars. Just gets worse the more HP you push.

The chains you have; are they specifically for a magnum, or are they LA parts?

 

The mopar is for a magnum, the comp cams I'm pretty sure is for a Magnum as well.

 

Are your cam bearings worn? This may not help you but recently i had to do some research on roller chain. There are a lot of different manufactures with different ways of making them and tolerances/materials. I seriously doubt that the manufactures of the gear sets make their own chain. I never really though about what is used on timing chains. Anybody have a name or logo on their chains? Possibly even a #. Like to know who uses what chain. Might be able to figure out who uses a better quality chain.
