Default 96 vs 01 Differences?

Working on a friends truck and have some questions. Did some searching but answers are all over the board.

Both are 46re trans ones 96, ones 01, but is there any difference in them being different years?

Will a pcm out of an 00-01 work in a 96 truck?

Does it matter if its a 4x4 pcm going into a 4x2 or visa versa?

Is there any difference in 96 and 00-01 2wd chassis and suspension?

Number of drive wheels doesn't matter, as so far as I can tell, the PCM has no clue if you are in 4x4 or not.

Too many differences to even attempt to swap PCM's between 96 and 01. (either direction.) It simply won't work.

Only difference on the trans is the governor pressure sensor. Those changed in the 01 model year, as did the retainer clip. Governor solenoid may be different as well. Best to replace them as a set.

For the pcm, we are swapping the entire cab from an 01 donor on the 96- interior, electronics, everything as one. So does the 01 pcm stay with it, or the 96 still needs to be used?

And is the odometer reading and other engine/run memory stored in the pcm or gauge cluster?

01 PCM should go with it. Verify that the body mounts are the same..... Some things on the cab changed over the years. Seat, and seat belt mounts being right up there on the list.

Cluster remembers mileage.

Alright. As for the gov pressure sensor and solidnoid, will they be an issue with the 01 PCM? The 96 truck 46re trans is in good shape, no issues with it.

Sensors need to match the year of the PCM.

I don't know about 'saved you' from some, but, you are certainly aware of the potential now. Of course, there are bound to be headaches neither of us thought of when actually doing the deed. Good Luck!
