I was about to order the plenum plate, gasket & bolt set when I found this on the Hughes site. $722 is a bit pricey for an intake but as a solution to the leaking plenum, maybe. I just wonder if it would get past California emissions testing.
i dont see why it wouldnt pass.. very interesting to say the least.. i kinda like the look of it too.. im getting ready to replace the plenum in my 01 ram.. i already did it on my 99.. let me know what becomes of it.. and how the truck runs with it..

This is a Edelbrock performer intake originally intended for a carb'd 360. Injector bosses and the adapter plate were added to accomodate mpi. It is a dual plane intake and should give better low end performance than a M1. Hughes has been talking about doing this since Jan.$722 is pricey. I have been kicking around the idea of getting one and sellingthe M1. Hughes would probably know if it would pass Ca. emissions. I believe they have to apply for a carb exemption for it to be legal there.

In thier original write-up on these, they kind of change thier tune on the M1, implying that itis good down low:
“Yes,” you say, “but my friend put an M-1 2 Bbl on his engine and he loves it”. Compared to the stock “keg”style, he probably did like it, but that is only part of the story. The plenum volume in the M-1 2Bbl intake is much smaller than that in the “keg”. The engine likes the smaller plenum volume, and for that reason, that the M-1 2Bbl intake feels (at low end) so much better than the stock “keg” intake.
And:
As a matter of fact, our stage 1 or II modified “keg” intake will make more power than the stage 2 M-1, 2-Bbl because of their greater airflow. However, the M-1 2Bbl will “feel” stronger than the modified “keg” and accelerate you faster from a stop until the lack of flow reduces their top-end power (approximately 3500RPM). What you need is a manifold that has the small plenum volume like the M-1 2Bbl and the flow of a ported “keg” or better. Read on!
In the write up about thier modified kegger they write:
The Mopar Performance Magnum M-1 intake is basically a carbureted intake with injector bosses and is designed for non-roller, flat tappet or roller cams with power bands from 5500 RPM and up. The runner length is barely 4.75" long -- much too short for hydraulic, roller cam power bands, which are generally below 6000 RPM. If you plan on only racing at the drag strip with lots of gears and stall--this is the manifold. If not, be careful or you'll lose your entire bottom end and mid-range torque.
Who knows. Hughes is a good company, and I have talked to them on the phone quite a bit. They know what they are talking about, butI have heard that they have more experience dealing with carberated race cars more than anything.

I don't live there, so I can't say with 100% certainty, but I think Ca has a pretty stringent visual inspection. Anything on your motor, from the intake all the way through to the exhaust, has to be stock or otherwise have a carb exemption number. I know the law in Va. really just pertains to Cat converters. If your car came with one catalytic converter, then that's the way it has to stay fo the life of the vehicle. I just ran into this when calling 30-35 exhaust shops within a 50 mile radius of where I live. I wanted to get true duals with two cats goin into an x. Nobody would touch it. 25 grand for the shop, 5 grand for me, impound of the vehicle, etc. etc.

It is worth pondering
that when Chrysler built the replacement for the Magnum 5.9V8
they made the 5.7 Hemi's intake runners
6 inches longer (not shorter) than the 15 inches of the 'beer barrel'
and made the intake manifold out of plastic
so that its insides could be smoother and also pickup less heat.
In one of the articles they quoted a Chrysler engineer who bragged that:
"the 5.7 makes more torque at 1000 rpm than the older 5.9 can make at 3200 rpm"
ijust got off the phone with hughes looks like this is my next intake...its about $80.00 more than the m1 figuring that the m1 is around $600.00 and another $60.00 for the install kit....

Being dual plane, it's bound to be atleast a littlebetter in the lowerrpm's, but $722 better????
That's the question that's bouncing around my head. Hopefully KRC or somebody will get one on a dyno soon.
