I have a 98 Ram 2500 4x4. From time to time when turning there is a knock/pop from inside the steering colum. The steering it tight and I had it aligned a few weeks ago. The steering doesn't slip or have any slop. Just when I turn sometimes there is a metalic knock inside the steering column. Any idea? I pulled off the lower cover and can't see anything. The next step I was going to pull the steering wheel, but don't want to hassle with the air bag.

+1 on rocksolidramtrucksteering.com you won't alway's have loose steering but still have that pop knock noise in the column which is caused by bushing failure at the lower end of the column its worth the investment it fixed mine

It depends on whats causing it, there are a few different possibilities.
1: Your slip joint in your steering shaft is loose. You'll need a new steering shaft to fix, I recommend borgeson.
2: Your lower column bearing has play in it. Since there is no replacement bearing available, the rock solid ram steering fix is the best option (I wish it was a bearing and not a bushing, but thats just my opinion).
3: Something else inside your column is binding a little bit, this isnt an easy one, if you find a solution short of column replacement let me know.
I had good luck replacing my shaft and column bearing (1 and 2). However, the shaft isn't cheap. I still have a slight pop occasionally in my column somewhere (only when turning the wheel) but my steering feel got a lot more solid by replacing what I did.
