I have a '96 SLT with 154k miles that just lost it's tranny. Given that I have some time and it's not my primary vehicle, I plan to rebuild the 46RE myself. I've received plenty of great info from MonteC and TransGuy, so I will be starting soon.
The purpose of this thread was two-fold:
First, to enlist anyone else out there who has rebuilt their own 46RE/RH tranny so they could give me any pointers and tips.
Second, I plan to take plenty of pics during the teardown/re-assembly and post them here so anyone searching for info on DIY tranny info can find it easily.

If you follow through, please, please, PLEASE take good, clear, crisp photographs of before, during, and after regarding parts, how they're installed, when they're worn, and all that. I hate it when people take pictures with zero annotation, parts are out of focus, no comparison, and all that.
One reason I'm leaning on you is because I'm toying with rebuilding the transmission in my truck as well. Also, a good, thorough write-up is especially helpful as well as the "why" you bought certain parts, who supplied said parts, as well as links to Internet suppliers. I do know there are special tools needed, so the mention of those helps in addition to MORE PICTURES

1999 1500 4X4 XLT Laramie Quad-cab 5.9L auto. Only mods are a 2 into 1 Magnaflow cat, a 1 into 2 Flowmaster 40 series, plain old Champion copper plugs, and 3500 wheel cylinders.
I removed the 46RE tranny from my 1996 Ram SLT 5.9l yesterday. Here are a few pointers to make the job go easier for the next guy.
1. Remove the spark plugs BEFORE you jack the truck up (just makes it easier to reach)!!!
2. Get a 1 1/4" socket for the front crank (so you can turn the crank when you need to remove the flywheel bolts).
3. Cut your exhaust behind the CAT. This will save time trying to pry it apart!
4. When removing the top bolts from the bellhousing, lower the tranny just a hair so you can see up into the cavity above the bellhousing. It just makes it easier!
5. Remove the oil filter (there is one bellhousing bolt that is behind the filter)
6. Soak all exhaust bolts in PB Blaster a week before you remove the tranny!!!
7. Have plenty of lights available. A magnetic light(s) works great. You can stick it to the frame rail and position it where you want!
