You need to change the front and rear. If you went to put it in 4x4. well I'm sure the others can tell you what will happen. You might as well go 4.10. Yea you can keep the one wheel peel out's.

You will still have the open diff unless you put in an LSD.

If you go 3.92 gears, like the ones I have waiting for my truck in my closet, you can get a "thick" set that use the same carrier you have now. If you go 4.10 gears, you will also need new carriers.

Just a bit more money is all, still very doable. And like Laramie said, you will still have the open differential unless you install a LSD. Gears have nothing to do with open/LSD/locker/etc.

About how much does it cost to have someone change a 4x4 from 3.55 to 4.10 gears? I will have to do this after I lift my Ram

More correctly, what WON'T happen after that!

Truck Gears. Richmond and Auburn come to me off the top of my head. Most will offer just a ring and pinion in the number you want. My suggestion is look for ones that come with "install kits". These will have new hardware, shims, etc. Lastly, having torched a few in becoming proficient in swapping gears out. This is not a quick, easy bolt on. Its not impossible, but you really have to pay attention when setting it all up. You will destroy your brand new gears on the test drive, if you don't do it right.

The only thing that needs to be changed is the gears in the axle (and bearings/shims and whatever else).

By the sounds of your knowledge about gears, I would suggest taking it to a shop who specializes in setting up gears and let them take care of EVERYTHING... including buying the parts. It is definitely not an easy task, and special tools are required.

Paying a shop to do just a gear swap (no lockers or LSD) will cost probably $1000-1500 by the time its all said and done.
