Default Engine Popped and Died-1998

Hey guys, had a weird issue last night with my 1998 Ram 1500 5.2 4x4. Was driving down to a buddies camp...had the cruise on for the trip...truck ran great. After stopping at a stop sign, as soon as I got back on the gas the engine "popped" and then died...I coasted off the road. I then tried to restart it...fired right up...pulled away and my Check Engine came on and has been on ever since..I'm planning on having my mechanic take a look, but I thought I'd see if anyone else has experienced anything like this?

Thanks.

have you got the electronic digital odometer? if so, turn the key to on, off, on, off, on and it will display the codes. write them down and report back. if not, autozone, advance, etc will read them for free.

^ You can read it the same way on the older rams, but you just have to count how many times the CEL light flashes.

I do have the digital electronic odometer, and tried your on, off, on, off, on and It did not display anything? maybe I did it wrong? Are you supposed to do it fairly quickly? Theres no autozone or advanced around here but I will be taking it to my mechanic in an hour or so.
