My transmissions doing just fine but I know tons of peoples go out so I'm just curious for perhaps future reference for me and present reference for some "whats the best thing to do when a transmission fails?"
On my old dodge I had my transmission rebuilt 3 times. (No problems on my new truck knock on wood). Anyways I spent 2800 dollars total for all 3 builds. But I see on Craigslist and stuff an automatic transmission with bout 90,000 miles on it for like $500 bucks. So whats the better deal? Should people rebuild and spend atleast a grand with that or just get another one for half the price?
Plus I have always heard that dodge ram 2500 automatic transmissions dont hardly ever go out. Why is this? and if theres is different than the 1500s trans than if ours go out can we replace it with the 2500 transmission?

The 47RE (the 2500 transmission) is a MUCH better unit than the 46RE(tarted) in the 1500s. Not sure of the details as to why though.
I would not buy the CL trans because you'll likely only get 20-50K out of it anyway. When yours goes out, have it properly rebuilt, have the shop install an aftermarket trans cooler in parallel with the stock unit, have the shop install a mild shift kit (TransGo TFOD Jr or the other one recomended on this site all the time), and then do regular fluid/filter changes and you should be good for a good long time.
But who knows with these trannies. That's why I'm putting a manual in mine (eventually).
yeah but with all that done and a proper rebuild like u say would cost probly 1500-2000. When say at the worst you get 25000 miles out of another transmission you could buy 3 or 4 used ones for the same price as 1 rebuild which im sure would add up to the amount of miles as 1 good rebuilt one would. I'm not trying to argue I was just looking at some of the possobilities.
Do you think when a transmission goes out its better to just convert to standard? I found this on CL....
Love that dodge ram, but tired of putting transmissions in it, this change over will work on 5.2 & 5.9 gasoline trucks, half and three quarter ton. The change over will include eveything required for installation, everything from the clutch, starter, flywheel trans mount, internal slave cylinder, line from master to salve, in essence, every nut bolt, clip, screw, clutch petal, COMPLETE CHANGE OVER. Seller will pull subject to buyer approva1. Will sell the trans seperately for 500. Thanks for the interest.

takes a shop atleast a week to rebuild. takes a human with job a couple of weeks. transmission can be swapped in a day. 4 transmissions equals 4 days which is less than a week.
why dont we just put the 47re in our trucks since its so much better?

Different computer controls it, different mounts (I would assume), bell housing bolt pattern is different (won't even bolt up to the V8s), and requires a larger output shaft.
there are probably other reasons too.
Aint like the old days of hydrolic only trannys. Now days, everything is computer controlled.
If you want to swap that trans 4 times, go for it. It'd give you some darn good practice.
tell me if the link works. Seems like the smartest thing to do is to convert for that price. I mean who can argue for getting rid of this POS transmission and going to a standard for $650 bucks.
To bad the 2500 wont bolt up I was just curious.
And I don't think I would change my transmission but 4 times but someone with the knowledge too may be better off doing that.
If it were me i think i would just switch to standard.

I'm with ya. The 46RE is a very old design that worked great in it's day but Chrystler has been trying to teach that old dog new tricks and it hasn't turned out good.
okay do this. go to CL. go to stakes and go to oklahoma. then go to tulsa. then go to auto parts under the forsale part. Then search dodge ram standard. it will be the only one.
God i wish i could get it.
