Default Holy Crap tires have gotten expensive!!!

One of my Cooper Discoverer ST tires took a crap recently so I stopped in the place where I bought the set back in 2003 and they want nearly twice the price for them! I was quoted $991 for 4 265/75/R16s. I was hoping to move up to the 285s but now I'm not so sure. I also shopped around a little and found the Toyos more expensive and Firestones on sale for about $800 but were a boring tire.

Here's my question(s):

Where are you guys getting your tires these days? Online?
If so, how do you get them installed?
What brands are you running?
Would you recommend 285s?

I have yet to find a tire that I like as much as the Cooper ST but if you know of something comparable, I'd like to know. There are some websites selling the 285 ST for $154 each, which is a steal, but I don't know how I would get them installed.

I have ran the 285/75-16 General Grabber AT2 tires and I think they are fantastic. You can get them from Tirerack for about 115 a tire.

You can take tires and rims to a tire shop and have them mounted. They'll charge for this, but usually do when you buy new tires anyway.
I think it's typically $15 to mount a tire at most shops.

Also, depending on what gearing your differential is (3.55 probably), I would recommend 265s because 285s are a little big and your truck will be kinda sluggish with them.

My tires are BFG LandTerrains (265/75) that cost $105 @ WalMart back in '06. About to have them swapped for a set of tires I bought from a friend because my tread is worn pretty bad and won't do well in winter here.

Shop around. That's the best thing I can tell you to do. I got a set of Hankook Dynamic Radials LT Which are a 10Ply tire. Got them bought, mount and balanced, and road hazard warranty. All for $548 and some change.

Yup, these are the tires I am getting as well.

For perspective, price is $138 x 4 + $107 shipping + ~$60 installation= $720.

Yeah, I've got 3:55 gears but it was a dog with 245s so for the past 6 years I've been "suffering" with 265s but they still look so dinky. My goal soon is to have a 3" lift put on so it should look better. I've seen many 2nd gens with 285s, 295s and some with 305s driving around town on stock suspensions.

I live in WA where everybody sells tires but haven't found any deals yet. I suppose I'll order online somewhere. What do you think of Dick Cepek tires? I would still like to have Cooper STs though.

Anybody have pics of a 285 on the stock chrome rim? That's the wheel I have.

If you are around Southern California TireMan sells used tires for $100 mounted and balanced.

You can also look around to different tire shops and ask if they sell used tires and use those until you can afford what you really want.

285's will make it sluggish but when i had mine i didn't mind because they make the truck sit higher and help a lot off road. and they look so much better.
dick cepek tires are expensive.
any bigger than 285 75 will rub the control arms on stock suspension.

Laramie, how many miles do you have on your tires? that's a lot of tread. and how are they in the mud? i need tires and i've been looking around for some that won't break the bank. it's looking like my bfg all terrains will have to wait until i win the lottery.
