This may be a stupid question but as this is my first stick is there a difference in whp between the auto and manual and about how much(a guess is fine)

On older transmissions, this held true, but newer ones are actually to the point that Autos will put more to the ground than a stick will. Say, post 1997...

If you say so.. There are a lot more moving parts in an auto and a lot of fluid to pump. At best I could see them being equal when the TC locks up but I fail to see how it could put more power to the ground than a manual.
+1 for the manual putting more power to the ground im most every situation. The only thing connecting the manual to the rest of the drive train is the clutch and gears, which is more or less directly driving the vehicle. An automatic has clutches and bands and valve bodies and torque convertors for the fluid to work with which will have a certain degree of slippage no matter what.

I'm with Laramie. The newer automatics put just as much down, if not more. However...
Our auto transmissions are not "geared" the best, so to speak, obviously, as anyone with a performance rebuilt transmission (or shift kit even) in one of these trucks will tell you. They shift much better with better performance if rebuilt really strongly and/or after a shift kit.
Before or after the rebuild/shift kit, a manual may still feel like its putting the horses to the ground better/faster, as you control the truck more than you do with an automatic.
