Well, the 44RE wasn't an option before the 1997 model year. After that, I haven't done enough research, so I'll trust you guys.

1994-1995 Dodge Rams:
-V6 4x2s had 42RH
-V6 4x4s had 46RH
-V8s had the 46RH

1996-2001 Dodge Rams:
-V6 4x2s had 42RE
-V6 4x4s had 46RE
-V8s had the 46RE

1992-1996 Dodge Dakotas:
-V6s had 42RH (RE in 1996)
-V8s had 46RH (RE in 1996)

Thats the extent of my transmission knowledge.

I'm in no way an expert. Much of what I know is from this and other forums. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the transmission in my 98 dakota, but it was made for Canada. It had the daytime running lights, and even a factory block heater which I had never seen before. There was a cord hanging by the radiator to plug into 110v. Again, I don't know if the canadian trucks were built with different transmissions.

I highly doubt the Canadian trucks were any different, transmission wise that is, than U.S. trucks. The only reason they would have changed it is if Canadian laws required it, and I doubt any congressman would make a law about transmissions.

Although, now-a-days, I wouldn't put it past them...

So what's the difference between the 5.9 1500 tranny and the 5.9 gas 2500 tranny?

BlueBeast is correct, there is no difference. Both 1500 5.9 V8 and 2500 5.9 V8 trucks have the 46RH if they are 1994-1995, and 46RE if they are 1996+.

You can't be in drive or reverse when shifting into 4 low. You need to be in neutral. It should slip right in and might klunk a little.
