Smelly heater + heater core = leaking heater core. You can't smell a leaking timing cover in the truck WHEN you are running the heater just like you smell a leaking water pump. IT'S THE HEATER CORE!!! Check and feel the passangar side floor board to see if it's moist. If you don't have time to change it, you can always bypass it by hooking the inlet and outlet together. there located in the engine bay against the fire wall.
thats how i found my timing cover was bad because i could smell it.

hey I am having the same problem with my truck also...it sad to say but whoever i talk to agrees that it is in fact a bad heater core. i will post a link to my forum thread regarding the issue...
I hope I'm not coming off as a punk 95ram, but I fail to see the correlation. Besides, this sounds like a classic case of heater core gone bad.
and your most likely right, i just thought he should be aware of it. im not doubting you at all on the heater core

When my T stat gaslet went south, it smelled pretty rank too, but when the heater core went...OOOHHHH BOY!
Its not a fun job to tackle either, but if the search feature was/is working there are a couple of excellent threads on how to do it and avoid purging your A/C system.
Make sure you block you tires if you are on any kind of grade! Safety first!

haha so is it safe to say that its a Dodge thing to go through heater cores?? sorry if i sound a little uneducated with the details of Dodge mishaps..this is my first vehicle and by doing all the work myself, I am learning little by little...haha
