Default Help T-case questions

Alright boys....I was leaving the car show this weekend and the people were lining the exit so I threw the Tonka into Low Gear and hit it....little squaking and lots of loud pipes and the people were dancing to the tune of MOPAR......HOWEVER

When I got to rolling down the highway, I hear what sounded like a chaiin (the t-case chaing) rattling around almost like it was slapping the case-----This t-case is a 231 with a 4:1 Low in it from a rubicon wrangler...

Question---- I think that the 3500 and 2500 came with several different T-cases adn one of them was a 231HD which is a heavy duty...Is this true or am I dreaming....

Also, the ATLAS trans cases-- are they worth a damn or has anyone tried this????

this should help

From what I've heard, the atlas's are pretty much bulletproof. I haven't owned one but I know a couple of people who have them and they swear that they are the best.

Atlas are amazing, but they're really only good for ya if you wheel like crazy.

Atlas II's are SICK. I just sold a Jeep TJ with one. A little overkill for your app. maybe though. Also the twin sticks can kinda get in the way. But yes some 2500's did come with the 231HD, and they're nice. If you want something tougher though, you might take a look at one of the NP241 variants from the 3500 CTD's. Tough as nails and a lot more practical than an Atlas II.

IS the 241 (which they also make in an HD right) a direct swap for the 231???

My application is pretty extreme so look at the gallery pics and let me know what you think???

I'm pretty sure that you can swap out the 241 HD for a 231 variant, but you may need a conversion kit. I took a look at your pics, and you truck's bad but I think that a 241 HD conversion might be a better choice. The Jeep that I just sold had a bored out 460, NV4500, Dana 60's F/R with OX lockers, and 38.5" Swampers running 4.88's and people still said that an Atlas II was overkill. I'd go with the 241.

the NP 241 or 241 HD isnt a direct swap, the input shaft is longer by about a few inches. you can get it cut down to the proper size and it will work, also the NP 231 HD came in 1500 rams with a manual trans and in some 2500 LT's the rest had 241's. you also might have to get a different driveshaft with the 241 since it doesnt have a slip yoke on the t case.

Hmm ... some of the autos, too. I got one. Maybe it's the tow package again ... dunno.

Edit: Sorry, should have made it clear ... talking about the 231 HD.

Re-edit Ok ... according to the dodgeram.org link:

Transfer case versions: NV231, NV231HD, NV241, NV241D, NV241HD

The NV231 transfer case is used behind many V6 and V8 engines in pickups and sport utility vehicles.

The NV231HD, used in the 1994+ Ram with V6 and V8 engines, features larger bearings and a wider chain than the NV231. All versions of the 231 cases use three gears in the planetary reduction set.

The NV241 is essentially a NV231HD with six gears in the planetary set.

The NV241D is a heavier duty Dodge version of the 241, with a larger input shaft and larger bearings to withstand the torque of the V10 and diesel engines.

The NV241HD, an option on Ram 2500's and standard on Ram 3500's built after 1998, has a stronger case and wider drive chain to better withstand the shock of snow plow service, a PTO cover and drive gear, and an extra bearing to support the thrust to the main shaft created by a PTO adapter.

Tonka: If you can find an NV241 (not the D or HD version) it SHOULD just swap right in. There's a great spec table on the dodgeram link. The 241 looks a LOT tougher than the 231HD.
