Default Lift Limits

Hi, I live in Mass and hear a lot about lift limits and people not passing inspection because they vehicle is lifted to high. I own a 2001 ram 1500 4WD and am looking in 31" tires but i trying to decide on a either a 3" and a 5" lift....would a 5" be to noticeable to police and or not pass inspection?
Thanks for any input.

You need to check your local laws about lift size. Only way to know for sure.

But I would think a 3" lift should clear 31s...

265/70/17 are 31.61" according to http://www.wheelcityusa.com/tires/chart.htm

And I run those on my 2wd

up to 33 inch tires will fit on 4wd stock suspension and stock wheels.
285-75-16 is 32.8 inches.

some people squeeze out 295 and 305's but that's pushing it.

Im clearing 35's with a 4in lift on mine. So 31's with a 3in lift should be pleanty of room.

I'm not so worried about clearance as more I am about being able to pass inspection or not be noticed by the police cause mass has done stupid lit law stuff... So I wanted more of the 5" but if I put 31" tires and a 5" lift would that be to much to pass inspection or would I be to noticeable by the police... Just wondering if other people had other problems with anything in mass before?

I know plenty of people with lifted trucks/jeeps. No one gets in trouble for lifted trucks. Had a friend with 3" lift and 35s that stick halfway out the fender on his ram....never pulled over and never failed inspection. Know another friend with 6-8" lift on a Chevy...no problems.

It all depends on which county/city your in.

Ps, 31s and a 5" lift is gonna look stupid

i know there are laws in some states and it has to do with how high the headlights are from the ground, cant be over a certain height. you would just have to check with ur state man. but doin either 3 or 5 " i can tell you aint even gonna come close to being to high.

as stated above, you will def.! be able to tell a huge gap with 31 on a 5" lift. i would either get 33s or go down to 3" lift with 31s.

NH law states that the frame cannot be any higher than 31" from the ground. pretty sure MA is somewhere similar to that.

This sir, 5inch lift on 33's with that hugh gap. Could you imagine if that was a 31 tire?

And for your orignal post question look here: http://www.liftlaws.com/massachusetts_lift_laws.htm
You would prob be able to go over the "height law" But there's always that chance you'll get a cop that is having a bad day and will decide to pull you over and whip out his tape measure.

31's and five inch lift don't go together. I would be patently obvious that the truck was modified, because of the HUGE spacing around the tires.

Call the local cop shop, they can tell you what is street legal. If not, the department of motor vehicles can. All we can do is guess.
