Default Timing Chain
I'll be doing my timing chain soon and just wondering why the distributor cap needs to be removed to do this?

It doesn't. Pull off the old timing set, line up the new one where the marks were on the old one, install.

It doesn't. Easiest way is to pull timing cover off, turn engine over with a socket till cam timing mark is at 6 o clock and cam timing mark is at 12 o clock. Pull off the old, put on the new.

That's what I thought because the book said otherwise. Do I need a tool to remove the gears off the cam and crank

No, they're just a slip fit. May have to pry a little.

Mine were easy, there's a possibility you may need a puller.

awesome, I know I need the harmonic balancer puller, certain type that doesn't grab the outside of it

It's either got threaded holes for bolts and nuts or you'll need a 3 jaw puller...

I used two of the long bolts from the water pump with my puller to get the harmonic balancer off, but don't think i needed a puller to get the timing gears off IIRC.

sounds easy to do. I can take apart everything up to the clutch fan in 10 minutes, the rest should be easy
