Question 05 Caravan Engine gargling/rattling/vibrating sound in Drive, disappears in Netural/P

Dear fellow forum members,

I am a mechanically inclined person, have fairly long experience with cars, do most repairs myself. I never heard such a sound in any other car before, and it makes me think that it may be Dodge Caravan unique...

When car in gear, or in drive mode, meaning when engine is under load, the engine emits a strange sound, hard to describe, but it is rattle/gargle like, that is not constant in its nature, its wave-like, more less more less more less, I hear it most in drive, even while driving a little bit. However it disappears when I switch into neutral, or park.

It does not seem to be coming from the engine block. I suspect some auxiliary component, generator perhaps?

If some one knows what I am talking about - please help identify the problem part. I know the description is very vague, I will certainly record it and post an audio here at the forums for better understanding, but I still hope that we can work with this even know, since I believe it may be a common Caravan symptom.

2005 Caravan with 90K.

I truly appreciate any input on this.

Thank you very very much in advance, my dear fellow forum enthusiasts.

Kind Regards,

Aleksey

From what I am reading, it could one of two problems. One being the flex plate and two being a reaction plate in the transmission. I have seen both.

Dear Mr Master,

Thank you very much for your prompt response - your opinion is very valued, I truly appreciate your assistance on this subject.

Would you say my lame description is understandable enough, or shall I upload an audio file to confirm your theory/suspicions?

Also, I would really like to know approximate prognosis regarding my tranny, perhaps its on its last legs and will fail soon, or maybe I could do some maintenance to help prolong its life? At this point, I never cleaned the pan of metal dust and changed the oil - I know how bad a flush may be to an old tranny, but maybe a simple drain and refill will do some good? At this point I wonder if I should start looking for a new transmission....

I certainly will do some research on the subject and get back to this topic.

Once again, thank you for your help. Your input is much appreciated!

Best Regards,
ALeksey
