I need to do my tranny fluid and have a few questions.
First off, I have a 03' 4x4 1500. Do I need the Deep Pan Filter kit?
Second, Whats a good ATF 4 fluid to use that won't break the bank?
Third, I read a how-to on a DIY transmission flush, but I am very confused on the process. I really just want to change as much fluid as possible without getting too OCD and wasting new fluid.

Can I just pull the return line, start the truck until Fluid stops pumping out, pull the pan, change the filters, bolt everything back up, then fill? How much oil should I expect to pump out?

 

You do not need a deep pan. A standard filter kit works fine. It has two filters.

Mobile 1 ATF4 is good.

Drop the pan. Clean it out and change the filters. Add a oil drain in the pan. Buy then at the auto part stores. Replace the pan and be careful on tightening the bolts.

Then disconnect the trans line and put it in a bucket and start the truck. Let it pump for a bit. Cut it off and refill the pan. Repeat these steps. Use as many quarts as you want but at around 17, you would have changed out all of the fluid

 

The Filter kit i'm looking at is either:
Wix 58843 Deep Pan, specifically states for 4wd
Wix 58846 Shallow Pan, specifically states for 2wd

Both kits comes with the pan filter and a spin-on with gasket.

Yet, you say I need the standard filter kit even though I have a 4wd?

 

I wasn't aware there were two different setups and both use the same trans.

 

4x4s get a different flat filter.

 

You need to look at the pan itself and compare it to the kit. I remember seeing the Dodge flat filter having a page that rambled on about all sorts of different combinations of transmissions/drivetrains/years being one type of pan or the other. The punch line is that you are better off calling Dodge to find out what your truck needs.

I've always used whatever brand parts stores had available, like ProKing, duralast. Never had a problem.
Also Chrysler recommends RTV, but I always use a rubber gasket. I hate scraping.

 

4x4 flat filter has a longer pickup tube than a 2wd and is slightly bigger.
Do not get a 2wd filter if you have a 4x4.
