Gen light is on, truck wont start.

Default Gen light is on, truck wont start.

i started my truck 3 times fine today, tonight i went to a buddys place and when i went to leave my truck wont start. i see the gen light on. i assumed the alternator is bad. now my uncle is telling me a jump start will get it running is this true?

Try a jump start, only one way to know if it will work...

gen is short for generator, im just trying to get some input from some guys that have had this issue or have some knowledge. thanks for your comment buddy merry christmas

Well it could be a bad alternator. See if it will jump start. Best thing to do is take it to an auto parts store and have them test the alternator and/or battery

toe trucks are expensive lol. i have a multimeter, i cant check it cause my truck is at my brothers and i have no ride there, im kinda hoping a jump start will do the trick to at least get it home.

Before you hook up the jumpers test voltage at the battery. Anything below 12.0 is dead normally (sometimes even up to 12.3 can be). When you jump it, leave the jumpers hooked up for a while so you have enough charge to get home. After you start the truck voltage should show around 14.
Something you can try to get by for a very little while is tap the top of the alternator. Sometimes the brushes inside it are worn and stuck, so a good tap (not a hit, just a tap) will loosen them so it can charge for awhile.

Generators haven't been used since the 50's or early 60's.

Does it crank at all?? Mine did that once and it was the main ground...when you jump it, put the negative cable on the big ground inside the right hand fender....

yes it cranks just fine, i need to test voltage. good news is im going today. hopefully i can get her home. thanks for the comments fellas
