Default ? weird contraption behind rear driver tire

does anybody know what this thing is on the frame rail behind the rear driver side wheel on my 99 ram 2500 ? its leaking brake fluid.

Or is that on the pumpkin?

I think it's supposed to adjust brake pressure to the rear wheel depending on the weight loaded. Or something to that order.

IIRC, people have bypassed it with no ill effects, but I'm not sure.

kejobe has the right of it. Dodge even did away with them, as they were kinda problematic. Bypass it, and get rid of it.

My trucks from 98 and I still have that part from factory. I just recently replaced the reservoir on the rear Axel, lines, and the drums with spring kits, adjusters and the shoes.

Its a load sensing proportioning valve, it has an arm attached to the rear axle, the more weight you put in the bed of the truck causes the arm to move at the proportioning valve and that allows the rear brakes to adjust for the added weight.
