I have a 99 durango. Recently it started dropping the oil pressure to 0 when coming to hard stops or downhill stops. Now it does it at any stop. I switched out the sending unit (what a bitch) but still have the issue. Any ideas what to look for next? I have oil. Also had recent oil change...

 

Sounds like your oil level is low and its getting worse. Check level and check for leaks. I would start with the filter and drain plug, especially if you just had it changed. Your oil pump is at the rear of the motor so under deceleration and downgrades the oil will naturally go to the front of the pan, if low it the pump wont have any to pickup in this situation.

 

Okay, it has plenty of oil and seeing no leaks. I'll check the filter etc. Maybe the pumps going?

 

good chance your oil pickup screen is clogged.means the oil pans gotta come off,ive just gone through this with mine,while i had the pan off i put a new oil pump and a new set of standard size rod and main bearings in,but,if you engine is knocking,id say its to late and gonna need to rebuild the engine,not sure if thats what you wanted to hear though...

 

+1 on the pickup screen. Gotta drop the pan to check that out as stated.

 

If you screen is sludged up its a good chance your whole engine is sludged. Good detergent dino oils may help but you'll need to do lots of changes without many miles in between.
They also make engine wash chemicals to use before an oil change.
I've used diesel fuel before. It works but really isn't a good choice.
Drain engine oil. Fill with diesel. Start engine. Idle for twenty or thirty seconds. Shut off and drain. Fill with fresh oil.
Scarey? Maybe. Works? Ya.
Good for the engine? I've been lucky. Lol.

 

Thanks I'll try another full oil change. And switch out pump. No knocking yet.. Fingers crossed. I was thinking engine flush, but wanted to do last.

In short replace your PVC and get a bottle of Mobil One Fully Synthetic High Mileage version 10W-30, a Puralator or Bosch oil filter.

What engine? What mileage on it? What oil weight was used?
IMO... I'm thinking parts of valve stem seals and maybe sludge in the pick screen and/or oil pump relief valve hung up. I wouldn't depend on an oil change or flush to fix. I'd pull the pan to be sure.

 

The 1999 Durango only came in 5.9L, 5.2L, and a very limited 3.9L V6. Pulling the pan requires lifting the engine very high or removing the front drive train, both labor intensive. That's why I posted the link. Good ideas however.
