Default High idle

Hey guys,

So I'm acquiring a 99 ram sport from a buddy and I just checked it over and drove it. Runs good for 200k miles and for free I'm happy with it. It has a few issues and I'll need your help figuring then out.

1st which I know is sending unit has low pressure like one of my old dakotas. Because I have to crank for a few seconds then stop then start again and it turns over.

2nd is the high idle up to around 2k rpm and if I step on gas it goes down usually. Any ideas? This truck has the 5.9L.

Thanks

The IAC probably needs to be cleaned or replaced...on a truck with that many miles, sensors and other things will start to act up and give you trouble...better check that plenum too! The IAC is located right on the throttle body on the drivers side

Thanks that was exactly my thought. Had the same thing on my 85 Fiero and that was the issue.

Edit, I'll read through the plenum stickie

Is the idle always that high or only at startup?

IAC is on the back of the throttle body.

2K is too high at initial startup, around 1500, settling quickly to around 1000 till it warms up is where it should be. Possible sticking/failing IAC.

It kinda bounces between 1500-2k but either way I'm going to clean the IAC after work and see what results from that. Otherwise it might be failing

Be sure to reset the PCM after cleaning. (disconnect battery while you are doing it, that should take care of it.)
