Default Took the D to the drag strip

So last night I went with a buddy of mine to the local drag strip...we are lucky enough in Long Valley to live about 10 minutes away from Island Dragway in Great Meadows. The real purpose of the trip was for my bud to check out the results of his new intake/exhaust/tune on his 2013 Mustang GT. That being said I thought it would be fun to see what the D could do.

It was about 83 degrees out last night, but incredibly humid. Not ideal for a naturally aspirated motor, but again I figured what the hell.

I ran two runs, one against a 2009-ish Mustang GT and another against a 2007-ish Chrysler 300 SRT8. I managed to squeak out a 16.5 at 89 mph and 16.6 at 88 mph. One run was with the truck in drive and no power-brake, the other run was with the truck in manumatic mode, with a power brake up to 2,000 rpm as the tree lit up.

Surprisingly, the faster of the two runs was in Drive, with no powerbrake. The STRANGEST observation about the truck is that I really never noticed how tall first and second gear are. In my "manual shifting" attempt, I shifted from SECOND into third just as I crossed the finish line at about 85 mph. Holy crap! I bet the truck would run in the mid-to-high 14's if it had better gearing.

I'm contemplating looking at different ratios for the rear diff as one of my future mods. My 60 foot time was 2.4 seconds in both cases, so I think we need much shorter 1st and 2nd gears.

The best part was that even though I wasn't posting impressive 1/4 mile times, the D got lots of attention and tons of great comments. I just wish it pulled as sick as it looks!

Thought you guys might enjoy...have a great day!

Frank

Yeah it was SUPER humid last night. When I got out of work, my windshield was foggy and I couldn't get it to clear up. Had to put the heat on 90 and blast the defroster just to get some visibility! Terrible!

I think a high stall torque converter would help alot as the d doesn't make power until around 4000 rpm

Budoboy - Thanks for your input. I just happened to stumble across you and CMil having this discussion on a thread related to flowmaster exhaust.

How do you think a higher stall converter would affect driveability? The D is my daily driver...I just think it needs more snot off the line.

I had a 2800 stall and a 3600 stall in my 07 charger and I didn't mind either on the street. You do rev a little more off the stop but it wasn't annoying to me at all

When you say "it revs a little bit more off the line" does it feel like you are slipping the clutch in a manual car, or what is the driving feel?

Yeah a little like slipping the clutch but not that noticeable except going up hill. Even then not bad.

I looked it up and it looks like we have 545rfe trans not nag1. I sent an email to someone about whether torque converters were available for that

I checked with edge and they list converters for the 545rfe. I like edge because they build to what you want and don't sell you off the shelf converters that may not stall at the right rpm based on your power level
