IMO oiled is better than dry, but oiled ones do require some maintenance, and dry filters are better than they used to be I think. As for which one you should get, it depends. How much $ do you want to spend? What do you want to get out of your cai, or what is your goal? increased hp? sound? The reason a lot of people build their own is that unless you spend 600 bucks for the best, you will not see any difference between building your own and ones you buy for 2-300 bucks. The $100 ebay ones are notorious for breaking and generally being of poor quality, so if you go that route you are likely to be buying something else within a year. If you really don't want to build your own, weedahoe makes some plastic welded intakes that are really sweet, as good or better than anything thats not ram-air style, and they are as drop in as anything else you buy and cheaper than say a k&n or airraid. If I was going to buy one, that's definitely what I would do. If you still are set on buying one for 2-300 bucks, any of the known brands are pretty good, k&n, airraid, etc. Hope that helps a little.

At least on my 08 5.7l I got all three and I'm not using a $600 paper weight, I paid half that and got one of the only CAI systems on the market that is C.A.R.B. certified..................of course for anyone outside of California this probably doesn't mean anything............to me it meant everything.
One thing to keep in mind is that any CAI system is not really going to improve around town mileage............but highway and towing for me were certainly more important................and I wanted proof of the performance in the way of dyno sheet showing what the HP/TQ was going to improve, and Airaid gave me the proof I needed.
Before I put on the Airaid CAI I had already taken my muffler and resonator off and used a Magnaflow muffler and 3" pipe all the way back to where the OE exhaust exited behind the rear right side tire..............no, I am not using dual pipes because they really don't do anything except make noise....anyway before I got the Airaid CAI I got about 20mpg on the highway..............now I get 23mpg. Before when I pulled my race car I got 12/13mpg on the highway when towing almost 5000lbs..............now I get between 15/16 depending on what speeds I choose, and no, I am not using the computer in the truck, just my pencil and paper to calculate "real" mile per gallon.
For me the Airaid CAI was the only one to buy, but my circumstances may be different than yours.

I got the K&N for my 04 5.7. Love it! Incredible difference over stock. Love the sound and how well the Hemi responds to it. Helped open up the beast haha.

My daily driver is a 2008 Dodge Ram standard cab short bed 4x4 with a 4.7 engine. I just bought an intake from ebay, and got it installed today. Its just a cheapy $40,00 dollar intake, but what a huge improvement it made. Before it seemed like the engine would run out of air when passing on the highway, but not anymore. Im also noticing that my gas mileage is going up as well.

From what I could tell, it seems like the air hat used on the 4.7 and the hemi are either the same or very close to it, and all I can say is that it is a very restrictive piece of junk.

On my 01 Dakota 4.7 I went with K&N and loved it. It was a 5 speed and seemed to have a little more grunt down low.

For my current truck I went the DIY route after seeing others on the forum. Went with a Spectre 9731 cone filter. Total cost for everything was about $70 but that's just because I had to purchase PVC, dope, and paint since I didn't have them around. Love it so far. Seeling the sensor in was a little questionable...
