ECU differences between years/models?

Ya I'm just wondering what though. Since people tend to just parrot information, or assume how something works I'm hoping that someone might have some actual info.
I've heard through the grapevine that the 2004 is less tunable? nobody has been able to tell me why it's less tunable though, and I've also heard through that same grapevine that the 1500 models are somewhat detuned compared to the 2500 models.
I'm pretty much just trying to confirm these things. I'd swap in a 2004 PCM, but if it is less tunable then I'd like to know why.
So far I guess I'm looking for a 2005 1500 ECU

well long story short, I'm trying to find a way to tune my friggin transmission. My ancient old flashpaq works on a 2004 and has the advanced transmission features unlocked.
It doesn't work on my 2005 because to the best of my knowledge the software on the PCM is newer than my flashpaq, and since the flashpaq hasn't been supported there's no way to obtain a calibration file to enable it to work on my truck.
So, I'm thinking my only real option of any kind is to swap the PCM for an earlier 2005 that might have earlier software, and work with my tuner, or swap with a 2004 if that would work, but I don't want to lose any tuning features.
So basically I'd be using two tuners, my flashpaq for the trans, and the MPVI2 I just ordered.
The other issue to that is I've heard the HPT ends up locking the ECU and making it difficult for other tuners to work.
