Default Auto 4wd?

This may sound stupid but I just got a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 bighorn. I realized shortly after buying it that it was not equipped w/ an "auto 4wd" selection. Just 2wd, 4hi and 4 lo. is this standard? and which models have the Auto 4wd?

the only thing i can think of that has auto 4wd is a chevy silverado Z71 with all the bells and whistles, your talking about being able to push the auto 4wd button and it slips the truck in and out of 4wd when you need it right?

It was an option on some Rams. Mine doesn't have it either, but it is explained in my manual. According to what I've found, it seems to be called "On Demand 4wd."

I think that would just cause more wear and tear on the transfer case and front end constantly shiftin in an out of 4x4, just comonsents if you ask me.

I can not tell you WHICH Ram models actually have the AUTO 4wd. I can tell you that Mine does. I have a 2006 Ram 1500 4X4 Hemi RCLB SLT.

There are some misconceptions in the earlier responses regarding AUTO 4wd. It is actually a VERY nice feature; depending where you are driving at the time. The AUTO 4WD is an additional position on the electronic selector ****. It resides between the 2wd and 4wd Hi setting. AUTO 4wd engages everything EXCEPT the front differential. The computer control system then engages and releases the front differential based on a specified amount of slippage at the rear wheels.

According to the owner's manual this mode is designed for travel on hard surface roads where you are going in and out of slippery conditions; i.e. icy stretches preceded or followed by dry patches or equivalent snowy areas. The intent is to keep you from having to constantly switch between 2wd and 4wd Hi modes.

Hope this helps; in part at least.

According to my 2008 Ram pamphlet, it was an option on SLT, Big Horn, and Laramie 1500 Regular and Quad Cabs only.

In Dodge lingo it's called "On-demand 4wd".

Click the image to open in full size.
(taken from the ebay ad for chill99's new truck)

I'm not sure what year it started but I don't think I've ever seen an 03 with it. It'd be nice to have, esp. for rainy days.

The other ****-based system is "shift on the fly" and works in the normal 4x4 fashion.

Just bought a 2007 Lone Star edition and it has this option. Where I live it snows or ices, then at some point some roads are clear and others are not, so I wind up shifting in and out of 4x4. This option will be nice next time those conditions show up.

How many times do I have to tell you Hammer? You have basically the same thing as the turn ****. Yours is electronic also, the only difference is you pull back rather than turn.

AWD is so much nicer, it also helps racing times. One of my brother's buddies has a truck that is a Magnacharged Silverado, and when he is in AWD, that thing hauls a$$.

I have it on my 06 1500 SLT. It is a nice feature, especially since I still have the stock HP’s. If I have to stop on a hill and I don’t have it on, all I do is spin the tires. And it is nice to be able to put the 4x4 in auto and not have to worry too much about losing traction. It only engages the 4x4 when needed, and is in 2wd the rest of the time.
