I use 87 octane gas from meijer gas station (generic). I currently have 700-800 miles on the new engine and I'm getting 15+ mpg with mostly highway use. I don't push the engine often--full throttle, as it a new engine. The throttle by wire ECU should accomodate this. If I was going to tow anything heavy, then I would fill up with the 89 stuff.
My 2 1/2 cents--Hope it helps!
ye am in NJ im using wawa, racestar, pitstop gas........ u no all the cheaper no name brand gas stations........ its all the same stuff practically. next tanks gunna be 87 octane (truck has 6,000 miles on it) i figured since i use no name gas i might not wann use the 87 but il try the 87....... THANKS FOR THE INFO
me, well I use 87, and it runs fine.... never used 89, so I dont know the diff... but the engine runs well with the 87, and I horse it a lot... good days I get 14-15, bad days 10-12....... foot in the intake that is...

I've ran 87 in mine before and would get a spark knock. I've Ran 89 for a long time and don't have any problems...but only get about 10 MPG around town.

I've run 87 for the last 18,000 without problems. I even run it while towing. I don't use a particular brand. Many different brands come from the same refinery anyway.
This subject seems to pop up every couple of weeks.
The manual says 89 is recommended, but it will run on 87.
Why does it run on 87???? Anyone??? Because the computer is taking timing out of the motor. When you take timing out of the motor, assuming it is set to maximize the recommended 89 gas, you don't make as much power. You'll be better off running the recommended fuel.
Todd, if thats the case, should I run 89 when I go to the strip?? and should I start doing it now, so as to adjust the computer to the change??? Mine runs well on 87, but I DO want optimum performance when I race it.....
Let me know....................GUIDO
