Blew up the HEMI today

That makes no sense compared to weeds post. Pretty sure the motor does not care that the PCM is different. Unless they changed any of the sensor styles or locations (doubt it) then it should work. Even with the MDS motor just un MDS it with the lifters from the 03 to 05 Hemi. I was eyeing up a 2006 Hemi from an HD (no MDS) and all the sensors that I could visibly locate looked all the same.

Hold tight buddy.
What happened to you is a COMMON PROBLEM with 2004 5.7 hemis.
This happened to me last week, rod when through the block for NO GOOD REASON. I keep 100% maintenance on my '04 Durango. I told myself this is just a fluke, bad luck. Know guys that race their Hemi Dodges and put NOS to it with no problem.
BUT looks like this problem is particular to 2004 5.7 Hemis.
There is enough people with expensive trucks and Durango that are rendered junk that there should be a class action law suit.
Go to the NHTSA web site and register a complaint.
Check this out if you don't believe me.

Read the posts in that thread. You will be highly pissed because your truck took a dump for a likely KNOWN PROBLEM that are not going to fix.

you can use a 2003-2005 Motor as a direct replacement. The mds on the 2005 won't work with your wiring harness, and there is only one difference between a 2003 and 2004 motor, other than the TCM..that is the oxygen tube that runs from the front head to the intake manifold on the left looking at the motor from the front..If you find an 03 take the one off your old motor. You're right about the 8th digit Any 8 will work..
