So Wallace did you replace the switch and did it resolve the problem?
I have the same problem and as you I thought is was more complicated
than the brake switch.

Tell me when you get it done, just want to make sure my diagnosis is right since mine was intermittent... it still hasn't messed up again though.

Glad this worked for you!

So to some up for others:

1. Brakes work correctly with the ignition switch off.

2. With the ignition turned on the brake light stay on and no other light problem exists.

Brake switch is probably the problem.

Keep in mind, when replacing the switch, follow the instructions carefully because you have to install the switch and release the brake adjustment lock with the new one installed or you will not have a properly adjusted switch.

+1 Wallace7777 I will say I am completely dis-satisfied with my 00 Durango SLT. This truck in 1 year has cost me more than I bought it for. So far wheel bearings, needs a cat now, all new suspension my rear stabalizer link fell off. Ive put a new alternator, head lights, battery, ecu, stereo (as oem one blew once got 2nd oem one and it blew again), now running 6.5" JVCs, 2 12" MTX using stock infinity highpass amp for speakers, and mtx 2 channel for subs. Now my brake lights dont work, put in fuse hit brake and lights blow, removed patch up trailer harness it started working for a day then bang blown fuses again. So sick of this truck its not even funny. and to think i was going to buy a new dodge bahahaha ill buy a toyota this time.

Default same problem

2003 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9 turbo diesel. Break lights stay illuminated when key is in the "on" or "run" position, yet the third break light works fine. When key is in the accessory position, all break lights work as they should. Checked all fuses and relays to be OK. Changed the break switch 2 times with ones purchased at a parts store. No change in the break lights behavior. Any of ideas?

Default problem fixed

OK, so I brought it to a local shop and they fixed the problem. Turns out that the prior owner had all sorts of aftermarket electrical accessories such as an electric start, alarm, cb, extra lights, etc. Most of which were not functioning and wires leading to nowhere. The shop properly disconnected these accessories. Once done so, the break light issue is fixed. Yee haa.
