Eh id leave it be. Ive had the tick since i got mine. It drives me nuts. Ive learned if i use a can of the stp oil treatment and 10w30 it quietens it down.

I've actually found the brand of oil makes a big difference. Conventional oil or Mobil 1 seems to be the loudest, Royal Purple or Valvoline SynPower seems to make it the quietest and Castrol Syntec is somewhere in between...

+1!!!!! I wouldn't crack my engine open unless/until I had to. I work under the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy.

I've heard Royal Purple seems to quieten it down and a recent poster said Amsoil all but silenced it altogether. I'm planning on trying one of the two at my next change.

Bottom line - it's normal, whether you like it or not.

I am using Z-MAX treatment, seems to be working. I shall bookmark this thread and let you know in a few months. My 5.7 sits beside the house most of the week. I get the tick when it sits on the incline most every time and some of the time when it sits level.Since I don't drive it everyday it takes months before I get any mileage on the oil.

I have the tick and I have 174,000 miles on mine with no problems. A long time ago on this forum, the discussion seemed to arrive at the cause for the tick being excessive tolerances on the valve guides. Can't confirm it personally, haven't had the need to tear mine apart yet. Someone else may chime in to confirm or deny.

My 300C ticks more at 69K than the Ram does at 117K. I'd say let it alone.

Before you go ripping apart your engine, get them to check for any broken exhaust manifold mounting studs. Very common in the 4.7s and 5.7. Few hours labor, couple hundred in parts.

In the 5.7's, its a little more, cuz you should replace the nuts and bolts going onto the x-over pipe.

I changed the manifold bolts out last weekend, ended up having to tap one of em, The holes in the manifolds are the reason they break, hole is about 5/8 with about a 5/16 bolt or metric whichever, and the exhaust seems to pull weight down on the manifolds, Next weekend I will install shorty headers and dual exhaust to solve this problem.. Far as tearing the motor down Ill just drive it like I stole it, and the mobile 1 does make the tick alot louder as mentioned in alot of the earlier post.amsoil will be going in it when I get back in town
