Just bought the truck, was told the cv axle shaft was messed up. Well bought a cv shaft an took it apart to find that the actually male piece that is in the diff which goes into the cv shaft is stripped also . No idea where to find that new male piece or how it comes out. Please help, mud fest is this weekend!
The stub shaft is no big deal, its held in by a simple c clip. May have to pull your diff cover and give it a nudge with a pry bar. Either side can be found at the dealer or junk yard. Do not lose the clip and you may as well do the axle seal while its apart.
Well just yanked out the cv shaft until the new stub comes in... But the stub is really stripped... Haven't pulled the diff off to check the gears yet, what are the odds my gears are all screwed up?
I don't think they will be.
Stripped splines on the axle shaft is a known issue.
The front diff's seem to have little/no problems. It's the rers on a 1500 that have the issues.

Ok thanks.. I just tried engaging 4wd.. And the stripped splines turned normal like they should if the cv was attached and no weird noises or anything so that's good... The stub I bought isn't coming with new seals, will the old one come off the stripped stub?
Hmmmm.....I don't know if your careful enough the seals might come off but, if it was me.....I'd replace and instal new ones for the price they cost and for the grieff they will cause with leaking fluid etc, if they're damaged.

Just dont drive the truck without the cv axle in, you need it to keep the hub assembly together. Saw some dumb a** with a IFS chevy do this one time and he didnt make it far down the road before he lost the wheel and needless to say everything attached to it haha.
Wheel wont come off a 1500 Dodge.
But not so sure about fluids leaking out of front pumpkin without some kind of "bung" or "cap" in place of the stub shaft to stop it leaking???
Al.
Yeah you will be.
Just leave the stripped stub in palce in the diff and when you can, fit the new CV shaft.
All you are missing at the moment is 4x4.
