Default Locking Differential

Could anyone please give me some estimates on how much it would cost to put a locking differential (limited slip) on my 2004 Ram 1500 4x2?

Yeah, you can purchase it aftermarket, just wasn't sure how much it would cost to put on my Ram. Usually this is only done with older trucks, but I figured it wouldn't be that difficult becuz it doesn't really involve a lot of electronics (some, but not a lot, not to the point that it isn't worth messing with).

Just put an Auburn and 4.56's in my truck. The gears were 170 the Auburn was 370 and install was 280.. If you're not getting gears, you should expect just under $700

Hmm, that's going to be too much for me, I could do about $400, maybe a tad more, but that's it. I'd rather have 4x4 anyways. All 2nd gen Dodge 4x4's in 4 Hi or 4 Low have the dif's locked, right? I notice they don't just say "4 Hi" but "4 Hi LOCK", so I assumed that means the dif's are locked up. This isn't the case with 3rd gen's too is it?

3rd gen 4x4's do NOT automatically come with LSD or any type of locking/limited slip diff's, by default. I believe ONLY the power wagon has lockers by default (standard).

My 2006 is one of them that does not have locking/LSD either front or back, and it causes me major problems, so I too am in the market for replacement. I am liking the TruTrak (spelling possibly incorrect) based on what I've read so far, for the rear, but haven't seen anything for the front as of yet.

Yeah it is expensive, but worth it if you do any wheeling. As for the lockers, it depends on the model that you get. I don't know about the 2nd gen rams, but more than likely they don't really have 'locker' differentials. The 3rd gens don't have lockers (except for the Power Wagon) they have limited slip-type diffs. which means there's only one power wheel to each diff. If the 3rd gens don't have lockers, I don't see why the 2nd gens would.. But I am not completely sure.

I don't know for sure either, I was just making assumptions since they have the "4 Hi LOCK" and "4 Lo LOCK" which I haven't ever seen on non-Dodge 4x4's (Ram, Dakota, Durango). I mean, the "LOCK" isn't there for nothing surely.

Well I don't know where you are located, but I bought my gears off of ebay they are Yukon 4.56's, and I got them installed at a shop called 10,000 RPM in Palmdale California.

Oh, you're not too far from me.

I am in Riverside, CA. What kind of a lift do you have? Have you had any probs with you new gears or has it all been going great?

I'm from Quincy, IL. Practically middle of U.S. Pop. ~40,000. Do you think it'd be about $100 less or so? I imagine Cali is more expensive than the Heartland of America.

I have a 6" Rough Country lift, and the gears have been nothing but great, no problems at all and they have no whining sound at all..

Do 4.56's tend to have whining?

Not necessarily, it's just that a lot of people get incompetent mechanics that get the wrong back lashwhich creates whining and sometimes "bucking".The shop that worked on my truck worked on my El Camino, and my Mustang GT, so I trusted them, and they did a great job.

That's cool. People need to find reliable mechanics, tell people about them, and pretty much stick to them. Tranny systems are very delicate, so I can see how a less-than-par mechanic would screw up a new gears.

He's talking about differential gears but the same goes for that as transmission. I will do about anything on my truck but I won't break axles open...no way jose. I go to a shop in vegas called adams drive shaft because I would rathe rpay a reputable shop to do my stuff than mess it up. My auburn posi was $380 and the install was $345. I also had gears installed though.

Well the gears actually go in the rear differential not the tranny. I'm not sure if that's what you were referring to.

I meant the whole power distribution system, not just the tranny (isn't this called the gearbox, gears + tranny?). I don't see a big deal with splittin the axles, it's getting into the tranny itself that is worthy of fear. Isn't positrack GM's patented version of locking dif's?

Yes it's the same thing as daimler chryslers limited slip though. Go ahead and change some gears then, just don't come to dodgeforum and say "ahh I was driving down the road and my rear end locked up and now won't move, why did this happen?" Because I will say i told you so. Everything has to be aligned perfectly or your rear end will grenade. I have friends who work in offroad shops and they see it all the time, people do the gear change thinking you just bolt them in and that's that then 100 miles later they are getting everything rebuilt back there and wondering why it went boom.
