Ok, I brought my 2002 ram QC 1500 into the local dealer for 2 problems. Vehicle has 41,000 miles on it.
1) Power steering was acting goofy, dealer fixed it with a $1.75 clamp, end of problem.
2) Check engine light came on and no tail lights! I had headlights and brake lights, but no tail lights. I checked the fuse block myself, I think it was circuit 32 and it was blown, so I replaced the fuse myself. Still no tail-lights. Hmm. That's when I took it to the shop.
Here's what they did. It ran a P1491 code according to my receipt so they had to replace the "power control module". That they put under warrenty work for no charge. Now he says he doesn't know what caused what problem, but because of the power control module being bad, they had to replace a Distribution unit, "56045433-AF" is the item with a description of block non 8015009 with a nice price of $252.00.. So that's what I was charged. The put all the labor fees under the "warrenty work" so my total bill with an oil change and fixing the power steering was $280+tax.
Here's the question: In changing these 2 control units, it seems that they didn't disconnect the battery as all my radio stations are still programmed in and the little "trip computer" that tells you distance, hours ran, avg gas mileage, etc was not wiped out. So my question is do you HAVE to disconnect the battery to do this electrical work and if they did, would that wipe out radio stations, etc or no - they could of done the work as stated and the radio would still have its programmed stations fine??
All I know now is that the check engine light is off and I have tail lights again and the power steering seems much much better. Thanks for any help on this one!

RE: Had truck serviced at dealer - did I get ripped?
I think most garages have a small 12V power supply that the plug into the cig. lighter so that they can take out the battery without killing radio stations and other saved info.

It's a 9v battery that plugs into the lighter.
And that could very well be why the radio stations and stuff remain intact.

If you disconnect the battery on the 3rd gen dodges, the stock radios retain their settings without any devices being placed in the cigarrette lighters. I have reset my pcm after putting on a cai system, and all my stations sets stayed,....

I used to work at a garage years ago, if they had to disconnect the battery for any reason, they would check your preset stations and reprogram the radio when they were done, this was a shop that truely wanted to keep the customer happy!
I would say the dealer treated you well, you got your truck fixed and did'nt pay too much IMHO.
