I ordered mine long so I could put the cutout as far back in the exhaust as possible. I believe that it was 20 feet.

why would you want it so far back? I suppose if you dont have headers it would be to help keep some back pressure in there. Otherwise, if you do have headers, wouldnt you wanna dump it right after the headers?

It would be louder if you put it up there but then you would have a ton of resonance in the cab. I like to drive with my cutout open, so I wanted it farther back so I can drive with it open and still be able to talk in the cab.

It was personal preference, I like to be able to drive with mine open all the time. I think I would be deaf if I drove with it open and had it up by the manifolds and cats. By putting it right in front of the muffler I still get the loud outside the cab without a ton of resonance inside the cab.
