Question Installing an alarm/remote start system?

So after having some *ssh*le try to break in my truck last week.....cost me $602 to get it fixed......I want to put an alarm system on my truck. The thing is, I don't want to pay the car audio places what they want to sell and install one. I can get the "mac daddy" Viper alarm for $250 on Ebay, but how hard are they to install? I understand that you have to have extra transponders if you want the alarm to do other things, but isn't it pretty much plug-n-pray? Anyone have any experience installing alarms that can give me some pointers slash advice? Thanks!

It is the Viper 5901.

viper 5901 is the shiznit. totally agree with buying that. but no nothing is plug and play it's gotta all be spliced into the vehicles ignition harness, keyless system, Sentry key set up as well. it's a Pain but totally doable. You'll need the 5901 and a bypass from metra not sure which one i'll look it up then. since I don't work with CC anymore i don't get good factory wiring diagrams and instructions but I have done a few in my time.

How good are the directions that come with the unit? And if I have to splice, where is the best place to find the info about my trucks wiring?

I have the Clifford 50.7x which is the same as the Viper 5901 and I love it. I installed it over the weekend and had no issues. I bought an extra shock sensor and a glass break off ebay for $10 each shipped. It does have a very long range. I used the wiring off HERE which is for the Dodge on 12volt.com and had no issues. I did test all my wires though with a VOM to make sure of everything. If you do not have power locks then you can still hook it up and/or add power locks. I do highly recommend getting either the 5901 or the 50.7x.

IF you're going to add an alarm to a vehicle without power locks I would spend the few extra dollars and add the lock actuators so that you can lock and unlock the vehicle with the remote. Always seemed foolish to me to turn off an alarm system then have to walk up to the truck and unlock it with the key.

I have a Code Alarm 9000SRT alarm/remote start system and I'm really impressed with it. It's supposed to have a 1 mile range but that's only line of sight, with perfect atmospheric conditions and your head held just at the right angle. I got it more for the remote start than the alarm since I really think alarms do little to nothing to deter theft. When alarms first hit the market everyone paid attention because it was unexpected. Now with alarms everywhere and going off all the time for no reason people have learned to ignore them. I intentionally set off my alarm in a Walmart parking lot to see people's reaction and no one even thought twice about it. Actually watched a couple people walk right passed while the siren was going off full blast and didn't even slow down to look.

that's why you buy a 2way remote so it tells you when the thing goes off. that way you don't rely on ppl

Exactly what kind of bypass harness are you talking about? I looked at Metra's website and they don't show anything for my truck except audio stuff. Thanks
