Default 2006 Hemi Ram chip

I have an '06 Ram with the 5.7 liter Hemi in rated at 345hp. I haven't done a thing to it. I am wondering if there is some way to put a hotter chip in the computer to up the power. I have never done any mods to a modern injected computerized engine. All my hot rodding was back in the carbureted pre-computer days when men were men and cars had 400hp LOL. Anyway, I was wondering if this is possible. I have heard of guys doing this to their modern engines. The new Ram Hemi is rated at 390hp. Is this a totaly new engine or is it just a hotter chip in the same engine. I have actualy heard that the Hemi in the Charger was rated quite a bit higher during the same years. What is the difference there? Obviously I am just after more HP the easy way. A guy I work with was bragging about his Chevy truck with a new motor he just built and how he has the fastest truck at work now and I just can't allow that. I am pretty sure my Hemi would still beat his Chevy since he appears to have pretty tall gears, but I wanna be sure. And if I can put a hotter chip in it, what kind of hp gain could I get and how much do those things cost?

You can buy a handheld programmer...there's not an actual chip anymore it's all flash based memory now like your ipod or whatever. Superchips makes one get the 3865 model and Diablosport makes the predator which is model U7137. There's some sticky threads at the top for both of those.

The new hemi has an active intake manifold...it lengths the runners down low for torque and shortens them up top for hp. The compression is higher...it's in the 10's compared to our hemi's 9.6 to 1. I think there's some head work too.

The hemi's in the rams are actually rated higher stock than the LX cars...not sure why DCX did that except the truck market is huge or at least was.

Oh and they both cost around $350 each plus tax/shipping. The power gain will vary depending on which octane rating tune you use (87, 91, 93)...but both claim around 20rwhp. But it's not just about power...the improved shifts really help, you'll be able to turn off MDS (shuts down to 4 cylinders in the 1500 non megacab hemi), and you can read what all your sensors are showing to help with troubleshooting.

What year is the chevy and what's done to it?

I wanna say it's a mid 90's step side, no extended or quad cab so it's definitely lighter than my quad cab. The engine isn't the original. As for what's been done to it, just the usual stuff... headers, dual exhaust, higher pressure fuel pump, aftermarket ignition, things like that. He couldn't do much with the cam and because of the throttle body/computer. Maybe a bit more compression. It goes pretty good although because of the gearing it doesn't seem all that quick from a start. Don't know about your Ram but mine will definitely sit you back in your seat from a dead stop. Let me ask you something else. On a newer engine like my Hemi, would headers and a freer flowing exhaust does as much good as it use to on non-computerized engines, or would it mess up the computers engine controls or whatever? Can you do just basic engine mods to these things? I see you/ve done a few things to yours although I'm not sure what an MIT is. Sorry, I am definitely old school.

Long tubes and a good setup to match on your hemi will really wake up the beast especially higher end hp....might be some loss of low-end torque but that goes for any engine. You'd be surprised at how well the PCM will adapt even with a speed density setup like the hemi uses. It's far far more adaptable than his TBI..

350 TBI's can be decent if he knows what he's doing...I used to have a 92 stepside 2wd. Even with full bolt-ons the top end pull is very sad....those TBI heads are the worse flowing GM ever made not to mention the stock TB doesn't flow all that well. If he hasn't done the vortec head swap and still running the stock cam/tune then you'll walk him once you get going...even in your heavy truck. He'll stay close for the first few gears though. Him getting the fuel pump makes me wonder what's really under the hood though...the stocker with an adjustable FP regulator is good for bolt-ons.

So I could bolt on a nice free flowing exhaust system and get more high end? That would be nice. Would a free flowing intake setup do any good or is the stock system as good as any?
Here's a pic of my Ram...if it worked right.

The 3 easiest mods to help out with horsepower would be Superchips Flashpaq 3815, then add a cold air intake and a good free flowing exhaust and you should be set. Plus, it'll sound MUCH better when you get on the gas!

Might want to change that to the SC 3865 so you can use the new trans options when they are released.

Your in a whole 'nother world now my friend. Computer controlled cars are the best thing ever!
I plug in my Diablo predator to the OBD port and can do many things. The tranmission Part throttle upshift is great. Can't wait until they have a part throttle upshift. That means you control when the trans shifts in every gear at whatever rpms you want based upon the gas pedal location.
And to think i only bought it soley to turn the MDS off is crazy. it is well worth the $375. With just the mds turned off, the truck shifts like a million bucks compared to stock. Ughhh, I would have traded it in if i had to deal with the MDS forever. gas mileage stays the same and I have a 91oct tune.
Here's a clip of my Magnaflow. It's mellow yet deep. No drone in cab and WOT is nolouder in cab than cruising. I've had many compliments both young and old. Well, mostly old...lol

FYI. Flowmaster does sound good with the Hemi's, but at a cost of flow. they aren't any better than stock mufflers. A catback kit can run from $300-$700 depending if you want Stainless or not. I have stainless and many opt the same because stock is stainless. If your not emissions controlled in your state(I mean visual inspections for long tubes), then get LT's. The stock y-pipe is very restrictive and LT's will wake your Hemi up...ALOT... here's a link for a complete bolt and go kit. It will work even with your stock catback if you choose so no worries about off brand catback fitment. they are all the same.
