Default EGR Valve replacement

I just traded in my '98 Ram 1500 5.9L 4x4 for a 2006 Ram 1500 Hemi 4x4 about a month ago. Check engine light came on today so I ran the code and came back with "P 0406" which I narrowed down to an EGR valve sensor (unless I'm wrong). Read something else online about when replacing an EGR valve. It said "do not start the engine without and EGR installed...." and then it said something to the effect of resetting something. Was it just talking about resetting the computer by taking the cable off the battery or is there something specific I have to do. Also is this a fairly simple job? I've replaced radiators, hub assembly's, water pumps, intakes, exhaust manifolds, axel and drive shaft U-Joints steering boxes and installed lift kit's but never messed with an EGR valve. Sound like something I can do myself?
