K&N traps down to 10 microns... the FRAM HP-1 traps down to 18 microns... Im not sure on the wix... But I I have honestly NEVER had an issue... and after installing my ported heads, there little to no wear on the cylinder walls... and the cam jurnals look NEW, you can clearly see the hone marks on both the cam jurnals and the cylinders...

Nothing better than AMsoil products. Study after study... PLus real life tests by me and a few friends... They're stuff really works.

If you use they're oil and secondary filters system, (1-2 microns) You basically can go 50k mi before changing. (a little trick is get a really strong little magnet off of ebay and put it on top of the amsoil oil filter) Hoooooowee thats a winner setup!

You know......that's not a bad idea about the magnet.
I have a little hole on my K&N filter on the end nut. It is used to "wire" the filter to stop it unscrewing in racing applications.
I could wire up the magnet on there, just to stop it slipping off.

You know what guy's? I'm 48 years old and have been buying into the hype of all the different oil and filter manufacturers for years, and after using probably every brand of oil, oil filter, and air filter. I've found that if you stick to the auto manufacturers severe duty maintenance schedules, it realy don't make a sh_t what you use.
I think mobil 1 is probably the best oil out there but at $5 a quart it't just too expensive. I don't feel comfortable going more than 3 to 5K miles on any oil and filter. No matter how good they are they still get dirty. I went back to castrol gtx and wix or fram filters. I change oil and filters every 3K and air filters every 10 to 12 k. I put over 143K miles on a 91 ford probe 4cyl. using castrol gtx and fram filters and never used a drop between cchanges.
And regardless of what some of the guy's on this and other sites will tell you, K&N filters dont filter as well as a paper filter. The filter that comes in a new Ram will flow more than your truck can use when clean. Save your money.

Sorry Ram Bob, but I disagree about the air filter. I have used paper and K&N filters on my motorcyle and cars. The air flow is much more with the K&N. If i change to a K&N on my motorcyle I have to rejet the carb because it will run Lean due to so much airflow. If I put the paper filter back on the same bike with the same jetting, I have a Rich running bike due to lack of air flow. Don't know how you could say paper will outflow a K&N. K&N will even outflow a True Flow foam filter until the K7N gets dirty , then the True Flow foam is superior. Any Way . Rant over. [sm=rant.gif]

There is soo much HYPE on what filters are best... but look around, there are vehicles that have been on the road for well over 200,000 miles that have NEVER seen synthetic oil nor anything more than a FRAM oil filter... There has got to be a point where you must decide how small a micron has got to be to REALLY cause engine damage. Im not saying dont use the best stuff on your engine but I am saying there is allot of HYPE... but I will bet you money that our childrens children 20 years from now will be on these forums when we are LONG GONE and the subject will be. "K&N only traps .0009 mics but AMSOIL traps .0001 " And it will go a little somthing like this.

"K&N is not the best because it only traps .0009 microns.... but the AMSOIL is BEST because it traps down to .0001.... I would NEVER use somthing that would let .00009 mics through my JET CAR. To prevent JET engine damage you MUST trap minimum of .0001 microns. But I will NEVER stick a FRAM on my JET CAR because by Grampas Grampa read this study on the internet that says FRAM sucks.... I know that was 25 years ago and I NEVER actualy heard of someone haveing an issue in person but I would not stick one in my JET CAR ..."> LOL.

As you can see it will NEVER end. But you must ask your self, if a engine can go 200,000 miles on regular mantainence useing Fram filters and conventional motor oil how many miles do you think they can go with full synthetic oil and todays modern "EL CHEAPO" filters? I would be willing to bet much longer than you think. And the fact is you would hav in most cases sold your vehicle YEARS before that engine died because you did not use AMSOIL on it.

Its all HYPE, I sugest you do use a FULL SYNTHETIC oil. You will get better fuel economey with the full synthetic over conventional oil. As far as filters go, I say get the largest filter you can fit correctly on your engine. The larger filter holds more oil, aids in cooling and because the filter is so much larger you have a larger surface area for filtering. The oil will pass SLOWER threw the filter allowing it to filter better and ever smaller MICRONS than advertised.

When I bought this 04 4.7 Ram I ran K&N drop in, Flomaster 50 muffler in the stock system and ran mobile 1 5 w-30 oil for over a year. It allways felt softer on the bottom end even for a 4.7. I dumped the K&N for a wix and it felt better. The milage was no better with the synthetic oil or the muffler. So I had the stock muffler installed and went back to 5-30 castrol. The result is 14 to 15 mpg in town and around 20 hiway. If the oil was as good as people say the milage should be better.

The stock filter in the 4.7 is the same as the 5.9 and 5.7 v8's and I think the old v10. It will flow more than enough for a stock 4.7, filter better than a K&N, and you don't have to worry about washig away part of the cotton gauze over time, or over oiling and dammaging a maf. (I know our trucks don't have a maf)
Now, if you have a modified vehicke that you beat the hell out of, and your ecm is recalibrated to take advantage of a cold air intake, and headers,cams, and whatever, then fine. And as for dyno sheets, you can dyno the same vehicle on the same dyno on three different days and get three different results.

Thats the truth! I dont play into the paper race. DYNO's are great for tuning.... but thats about it! I would rather line up at the track and compair ET's... The track will be more consistant than DYNO and you can figure out your HP just by doing the math.

OK I read everyones post and everyone has there own opinion on what to use..

BUT

Bottom line... what is the answer... Is going to the dealer and getting the standard mopar filter ok in todays trucks...

I do 36k a year in my 05. I "sad to say" hit the dealer every 3 to 4 k miles for there 24.99 special oil change..

Is this bad.. Should I be doing it myself?? Should I use synthetc seening as I do so many miles..

Not one post is really clear on what IS in FACT the best to do for our wonderfull dodge Ram Trucks

So guys... Whats the real answer......................
