1978 Champion Motorhome
I am trying to get an old 1978 Champion motorhome going again. It has been setting up since my dad died in 2001. It has a 440 Dodge engine. I replaced the coil and distributor and got it firing. It will start up and run as long as I pour gas in the carbueretor but will not stay running after the gas burns out of the carbueretor. Seems like it is not getting gas from the gas tank to the carbueretor. I have also replaced the fuel pump. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to do next or any info where I can go for help? Thanks

RE: 1978 Champion Motorhome
I HAVE THE SAME MOTORHOME, FORST I WAS WONDERING IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE ORGINAL MANUALS, IS YOU DO CONTACT ME -MRG348@YAHOO.COM- OK NOW FOR YOUR PROBLEM , I HAD SAME PROBLEM, BUT ALSO MY GAS GAUGE DIDN'T WORK, I TOOK OFF MY FRONT GAS TANK ,AND CLEANED IT OUT WITH A WATER HOSE,THEN I WENT TO RAMCHARGERS ,AND BOUGHT A UNIVERSAL SENDING UNIT FOR INSIDE THE TANK WITH A NEW GAUGE TO MOUNT ON THE DASH, WHEN I TOOK OFF THE TANK ,I FOUND A FUEL FILTER MOUNTED ON THE FRAME RAIL NEAR THE TANK,I REPLACED THAT, I ALSO FOUND A FILTER AT THE FUEL PUMP ON THE ENGINE, I REPLACED THAT. NOW I HAVE A PERFECT SYSTEM THAT WORKS FINE , STARTS INSTANTLY. ALSO WHEN YOU FLUSH THE TANK,YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THE TANKS RUST ON THE INSIDE, I USED MURIACTIC ACID TO REMOVE IT ,THEN FLUSHED REALLY GOOD WITH WATER HOSE, DIDN'T GET IT SPOTLESSLY CLEAN,BUT PRETTY GOOD. I THINK THAT IS WHY CHAMPION PUT TWO FILTERS ORIGINALLY WHEN NEW. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU , MRG348

RE: 1978 Champion Motorhome
sounds like the carb could stand a good rebuild.
besides, it sounds as if the float is stuck and keeping the car bowl from getting it's supply of fuel, or the venturi is blocked.
I would first see if your actualy getting fuel to the carb, just pull the line off, set the end of the line in a bowl or cup and put the ignition to run but dont start. if you have fuel it's the carb, if not, the fuel line is clogged.
I would still rebuild the carb anyway
