The ASD relay, on my truck, and the newer trucks, is used to power the oxygen sensor heater elements, ignition coil, and fuel injectors, and some other things. The fuel pump relay (which powers the fuel pump, of course) is seperate, and I think the computer controls the two seperatly as well.
I would think the setup would be the same on the cars.

From allpar.com...
The Auto Shutdown Relay (ASD) - actually, this rarely breaks, but when it does, the engine stays off. One purpose of the auto shutdown relay is to avoid "dieselling." It kills all fuel delivery and spark. The ASD can be triggered by a broken wire or short in another place -e.g. the fuel pump.

As I have read online, it appers some Chrysler vehicles may, or may not, have fuel pump relays, in which case, as you said, das2123, the ASD relay would take over its job (which, would have been my guess if my truck didn't have an ASD relay).

No no, we have a fuel pump relay also. Maybe it's just an overkill thing, I dunno!

neons have both, i just wondered exactly what it controlled, i had my car die the other day twice at the race track ( my neon is a hacked up caged dirt circle track car) i figured out the dying problem, the o2 sensor was shorting after it got so hot,( i think) i came out today in the garage, the o2 was hot, the ign. was off, the battery was almost dead, never seen that happen before, it happened after my car took a really hard hit from behind, so im still not 100% sure the ECM isnt cooked, but it runs only with the o2 sensor unplugged now, im gonna thorw the old one back in for a test & hope its ok

the ASD relay supplies voltage to all necessary sensors and parts including the fuel pump in order for the engine to start. the pcm then provides the ground and recieves information from sensors in order for the car to start. It is very rare for this circuit to go down, but it can happen. It does run the O2 sensor and if the is a short in any of the wires that the ASD circuit runs It will shut down the engine.

well i changed the o2, the "old" one gets hot with the ign off, but runs with it pluigged in, it kills the battery overnight, maybe the impact of the wreck cracked the board on the ECM.... ive been through the whole wiring harness and nothing is melted, crossed, or rubbed through... it was fine till i got rear ended really hard, BTW the ECM is relocated and is mounted on the firewall inside the car now
