Hello,
I have an 03 Durango with the infamous "blower only runs on high" problem.

After reading this forum, and seeing the info at http://www.gtrippleb.com/auto/durang...r_resistor.htm , I've decided to pick up the part and try replacing it myself (only $13!)

Has anyone done this on an 03 Durango, and if so, any pointers? The images in the link above are for a 2001, so I'm not 100% clear if it's still applicable to the 03.

it looks that this pic might help me .. My 2003 Durango climate control only works in High,, I read another posting by "KD" with the same problem .. I am going to try to replace it this weekend,, Thanks for info.

 

The resistor location should the same on all 2001-2003 models as they have the new revised climate control dash layouts.

Ok, that was pathetically easy to replace.

The resistor is mounted vertically beneath the passenger console...it was a little trick to dismount/remount, but overall it only took 10 minutes (including backing out and pulling back in to the garage!

I spoke with a buddy who had this done at the dealer...cost him over $175. He was rather disgruntled when I showed him the quick-fix.

 

Replaced the resistor works great.. Here is the new part # for 2003 Durango resistor block 5174618AA. Thanks for the info.

 

Thank You for the link. I have an 03 and my blower just started to run on high only sometime in the last two days. It's now going to cost me under $20 to fix it. The part needs to be ordered.

 

Dont just remove/replace the resistor without checking the root cause of the wiring problem in the first place. With my case there was a short on the wiring harness causing the power wire to ground out against the POWER connector wire of the resistor block. This ultimately caused the r/r of three resistors in just over a year. I found the short and had to r/r the entire harness, basically everything up to the cabin side of the firewall. A few quick notes.

1. Verify the color codes, but my donor vehicle for the wiring harness was a DAKOTA.

2. When you splice the wire from the donor vehicle cut as far against the firewall as possible, that will ensure you have plenty of wire to splice into the resistor.

3. Resistor pack (not including harness) from Dealer approx $10-15 that was in 08, but should be pretty close to the same.

4. Save the hassle, spend the $15 at the dealer for the resistor, I used my junkyard resistor for troubleshooting and testing but once I knew I had a good harness, I swapped to the dealer resistor and have had no issues since then.

I changed out the blower resistor ty for the info on it.
it was easy for me my hubby did not belive that i did it and did not go to a shop but i am getting a new part smell is that normal...

 

Don't know if you noticed it or not but you are replying to a very old dead thread. That said the resistor pac usually burns when the resistance of the motor is bad causing the resistor to burn or even the wiring too. You may be smelling the new resistor burning again and not a "new part" lol. Ultimately you may end up replacing the blower motor too if you blow the new resistor. Do not buy another resistor unless you replace the motor if the new resistor blows, as they will keep burning up. Good luck.
