RE: 15 inch rims? Cheap Mud Tires?
15" Rims might not fit on your '01, as it has the larger front calipers. They're twin piston, where as the pre 2000 trucks were single piston.
It would also depend on the brand of 15" rim. Some will fit just barely...some will fit with grinding...some won't fit at all.

you'd be better off finding a 16" rim (they came stock) for cheaper than a 17 but still you're gonna have to shell out the bucks for the tires anyway.
it's all about the inside tire diameter.. you can measure how much space you need by pulling your tire off and using some string from the center of the axel and put it to the farthest point on the caliper and then measure that string.. or use a tape measure. if that is more than 7.5" then a 15 is 99% of the time not going to fit without some work to the caliper.
personally those are things that i'd REALLY not mess with. you can make something go all day long but to make sure it stops... THAT is priceless.

cheap mud tires: dunlop mud rovers..... i dunno what size you want, but i know for a fact theres a 31 and a 33 mud rover, i think theres a 35 but i aint sure
if you get 33 inch Dunlop Mud Rovers for a 15 inch rim its ~110 bucks..... for a 16 inch rim its about 130 bucks...... thats a 10.5 inch wide tire
those are the tires i have and their really really good, both in the mud and on the road. ive heard that Mud Kings are also cheap but i dont have experience with them, and i also dont know teh price offhand.

i agree you should keep the 17's on it.. but if you are trying to go to a smaller tire you can for sure fit a 16 inch wheel. that's all i was sayin.
