Default 2009 Ram2500 5.7L HEMI 14.3mpg:(

Ya'll help me please. In November 09 I bought a 2009 5.7L Hemi quad cab Laramie 3.73 rear and for the looks - it's a fine machine. BUT - I can't get it to do better than 14.3mpg( all hand calculated) on pure highway to save me. I know - it's not a Toyota so don't expect mpg. I've been using 89oct no ethanol Shell at a premium price, no difference. 89OCT shell with the 10% ethanol- same, 87oct with and without ethanol - same but 13 to 14.3mpg. BUT, I did one 90 mile trip from Jackson, TN to Memphis cruising at 68 last week and the overhead lie-o-meter showed 17.3 - it hand calculated to 17.1. I WAS AMAZED. So I tried the more 89 oct BP again - same 14.3. It only has 3300 miles on it, but I say it should get at least 17mpg. It's about 800 pounds heaver than a 1500, it shouldn't affect it this bad should it? I drove it at 60 and checked, 65 and checked, 72 and checked - it doesn't matter. Sure would appreciate some info - flaming doesn't bother me - I have this truck bugging me more!! I've been to the dealer trying to get them to take it back - HA, FAT CHANCE!!! With it's life time power train warranty I don't need to throw that away with chips. It got 8.3mpg with a 6000 pound travel trailer for some 180 miles mostly flat with rolling hills. It has a K&N replacement filter (not the cold air one) and using Mobile1. Thanks for any thoughts. Ed

join the club.. gas mileage is really about the only think i don't like about this truck.. i think i get better mileage using 87 then i do using 89 or higher.. there are a few (very few) guys saying they get better mileage but i don't know how they are doing it.. i got about the same as you did towing my jeep back home a couple weeks ago.. i have almost 5k miles on mine. i have an 07 GMC that has a 26 gallon tank and i get more miles per tank in it then i do a 32 gallon tank in the dodge.. it sucks but i guess that's the price we pay for more power..?

Wrong forum. A 2009 2500 is a Gen 3

Yeah, I was floating on 16 mpg when I drove to work. Now, I am only getting 13.6mpg. I don't even feel the fuel saver kicking in anymore. I used to watch the RPM's drop when I was cruising, but it has quit for some reason. Maybe I need the flash done.

slemlode, the weather has a big part to do with gas mileage. The colder it is the more fuel you use.

This week I completed 750 kms/466 miles with one tank , and probably had 50 km left. Not to bad.....

You want the dealer to take back your truck because you are not getting the gas mileage you expected, um OK. If mileage meant that much to you you should have ponied up for the diesel. The numbers you put out don't seem unreasonable for a 2500 gas truck. Towing about 3000lbs, low air resistance trailer I get about 10/11.

My 07 2500 Mega Cab hemi would only get 14 mpg. Your 09 2500 is going to be the same. I did get 16-17 on the hwy with long trips. Dont feel bad my 08 Cummins only got 14-16 and my 09 hemi gets 12-14 around town and 16-18 hwy. I sure miss my 03 3500 cummins that got 23 mpg all day long.

Anyone see big improvements from switching over to a lockout style hub? These people say this: http://spyntec.com/00-09_dodge_frequ...ked_questions/

Spin your front wheels when you have jacked up sometime, there is a lot of resistance there. And the 5.9 Cummins (in a '04 2500) was the best for fuel mileage of any truck I've ever driven.

If you guys think your 24v cummins get good mileage you should drive a 12v cummins in the trucks older than 98. Best motor put in a truck.

Anyway, 14 mpg for an HD hemi is not bad. A guy with a 2010 Hemi HD told me he was seeing single digits!

Get 18mpg strictly on highway 70-75mph mixed flat and hill runs, 15 avg mpg mixed highway/local driving, 13-14mpg, strictly local driving not watching the lead foot, 11-12 with my 25 foot CC boat that totals wt with trailer around 6200lbs. On highway watching how I press the accel. and driving I can push it to 19.6mpg. I only wonder what can be done on pure 93 octane old fashion fuel without E10.

Yeah the 2500 is also heavier, compare your mpg to any other comparable 2500 truck and you will find you doing good. My neighbors 2500 HD silverado with the 6L gas would only get 12-14mpg on the hway, he never likes to talk about the trailer he pulls for vacation, looking at 6-8mpg.
