Default Navigation question (2011 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie)

Not sure where to put this sorry if I didn't put this question in the right area sorry first timer on the forum. My question is this..My father just recently bought a 2011 Dodge Ram Laramie from the local Dodge dealership and he did noticed on some of the newer Laramie trucks have newer navigation maps then his does. He navigation has the 2009 - 2010 maps is there a way for me or him to get a 2011 Navigation map DVD from some where maybe the dealorship or a website that deals with that? I believe we have the Media Center 430 RBZ.

Thanks Jamie

Welcome to DF!

Right there at the top of all the threads/posts is a thread you should read:
http://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-ra...s-section.html

As Spider Man in the popular series "Family Guy" states, "everybody gets one." I will move your thread to the 4th gen Ram section (2009+ Dodge Rams).

I spoke with the local Dodge dealership parts department/service the manager of that area claims that you can update to the newer maps if my Garmin supports it. He claims there is no updates out yet for the Navigation system. So hopefully there is an update coming out soon.

From what we understand it from Navteq there is a new navigation software update that out now as of a week ago for the RHB navigation radios here's the link and also has anyone had hand's on experience with this update? I can't find any reviews of it anywhere.

2011 use navtec as well they are telling every one that it is a garmin but it is not. Just spent 2 days trying to get my 2011 nav updated or some kind of satisfaction from dodge because it is not at all current and was give in the run around. The dealer told me to contact chrysler, chrysler told me to contact garmin, garmin told me its not there system that its navtecs, and navtec tells me its theres but cant be updated for 18 months and then there is a fee for it. When I purchased the truck (2011, 3500, Ram Diesel) I was told it had a garmin nav system but it was a lie. Chrysler wont do anything about it and told me to resolve it with the dealer. Navtec is the supplier of map info for garmin as well and garmin has way more current mapping info. I think dodge nav system is JUNK

Navtec supplies the map data for our Garmin GPS on the 11s. They also supply the map data for MANY other GPS systems.

Garmin builds the GPS in my truck, and it is loaded with Navtec data.

That's how it works - they are Garmin machines, and use Navtec data - always have!

There not Garmin I talked with Garmin today and they are not Garmin they are not even close to having as much info as even a cheap Garmin. If you go to your menu and check you will find that it list the system you have, and it will not be Garmin, but you are right that Navtec supply's Garmin. This second rate system that Dodge put in the 2011 model trucks (WITH NO SUPPORT) is a over priced piece of you no what, in my opinion.Maybe in some major centers they might be ok, but certainly missing a lot of roads, and towns in Canada.

The 430 is Garmin and the 730 is Navteq I believe if this has not already been said. Mitsubishi builds the lower end 430 and our good buddies at Harmon Becker build your high end Nav unit that has streaming music etc. I could be wrong but this is my understanding of it.

Sucks for us in Canada, we always get the short end of the stick, our money is par yet we still pay more money for stuff here, and the internet is built for the US really, Most often you cannot get something you buy delivered to Canada because they say it's too much hassle, one form the same crap we do here. A declaration or what it is. Oh well we will always be second class citizens when it comes to the US. Although they depend on us for the lions share of their oil, go figure. No offense guys to the people in here just the way Canadians get treated in general, but one thing I find more Americans complain about the poor dealer service. I have complained about an early episode I had with original dealer but since this new one really no real major complaints. Just small things that are easily gotten over.

So my 2009 Ram 1500 needs a nav update. Called Chrysler, they referred me to NavTeq. NavTeq says $149 for an update. Chrysler says they don't cover it.

Dealer where I bought it says Chrysler should be sending me an update for no cost in the mail. My buddy at work (who has a 2011 Ram 2500) got an update disk in the mail about a month ago, and as far as he can remember, he didn't ask, didn't sign up for it, or pay any additional $.

Who's right?

Also, Chrysler did mention there is a u-connect update that they will send me at no charge in the mail (since I called). Why not send it to me without asking?

Chey,

Chrysler will not pay for the navigation update. Streets are constantly being added or changed and if a customer wants those updates then they would be responsible for the cost. If a media unit had a software flaw, these customers would most likely get something in the mail from Chrysler with the correct software, or a notice to see the dealer to have it done for them.

As far as sending everyone an update without having to be asked, we do that on most new vehicles. On older vehicles we do it upon request as we have no way of knowing if you still own the vehicle or live at the address we have on file.

My suggestion for radio updates would be to visit Dodge.Com and select the For Owners link at the top. You can find any updates we offer free of charge there, as well as a lot of other information about Chrysler radios and media centers.

Hello all,

I ran across this old thread when I was searching for info on updating my 2011 RAM - RHB at NAVTEQ. Turns out as others have noted, the update of the maps costs $162.13 (with tax and shipping).

The price seems outrageous, so I exchanged a couple emails with the GARMIN folks asking about using a LIFETIME GARMIN CARD which can be bought for $50, and entitles you to a lifetime of map upgrades. I did not expect them to acquiesce to allowing the $50 card, I just wanted to see what their response would be... Anywho, here is GARMIN's latest response:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to assist you today.
Garmin provides the navigation software and Navteq provides the map image files for all of our units, including OEM units. Garmin is not a mapping company, rather we create the devices and the software that navigates the maps and pinpoints your location through GPS.
$149.00 is the cost of the map update for this system. These units are updated onces a year which actually includes the data from 4 different automotive updates which are released quarterly at $49.99 apiece. Therefore, the cost of this map comes out to be cheaper than the cost of the same amount of information from the automotive side. Unfortunately, the lifetime maps are not available for these units as of right now.
The 2012 version of maps are what is on the DVD right now, and this was released last August. If you are looking to purchase an update I would advise you to wait if possible as the 2013 maps are right around the corner.
If by satisfaction you mean that the maps will work then yes. However, once the maps are activated on your device it is a non-refundable purchase

A lot of marketing spin, however, one bit of worthwhile info, he claims the 2013 update is just around the corner...

JUST FYI.
