I never buy it, but then I get rid of my trucks around every 9-10 years with about 140 - 150k miles. Never really had any really expensive repairs, just minor stuff. The key is keeping up with the maintenance. Most important is the trans fluid, keep it fresh and the trans will last as long as the motor. The electronics are kinda scary but they are like TVs, if you get a bad one, it usually fails during the warranty period, then the are very reliable.

I don't have one either. 112K on the clock and the only issues that I've had that it would have taken care of are.

1- front unit bearing at around 80K
Replaced transmission cooler lines at somewhere around 90K

That has been about it other than normal maint (brakes, fluids, tires, shocks)

I have the 7 year max care. I have used it for some interior issues with the seats. It has covered items the limited powertrain warranty doesn't.

imo, i have not quite recovered the cost of the warranty. One year to go, so we will see.

Default Warranty

I have a 6 year 120,000 mile one that is about ready to expire. I had to use it for my AC condenser around 40K, my windshield wipers quit working 75K, tie rod ends, and front brake caliper 80k, and rear passenger door wouldnt open 110k.

Did I get my $1200 out of it? Not sure but it was worth the piece of mind to me.

I'm 59 years old. I (we) have owned a ton of new vehicles and have never bought any extended warranties. Let's say I had been buying them for my last 10 vehicles. I would have spent maybe $15k for them. Now I go back and try to remember the times I would have needed them and can only come up with a some repairs that I spent maybe $2-3k. So to me over the long run, I'm way ahead by not buying them.

It's all an individual decision though.

I don't know what you mean by "a ton", but I would take it as meaning probably getting a new one at least every 3 years, as you mention 10, which would stretch back 30 years, or to age 29.

Given that, I agree it would be foolhardy to purchase something which is unlikely to be used, since all/most of your use would be covered under the factory warranty.

The exception would be if the manufacturer gave you your money back for the unused portion of the warranty (believe it or not, Mercedes does this if you trade the vehicle in, and if you sell it private party the warranty is fully transferable, and therefore adds value to the vehicle).

Right, mostly based on how you go about vehicle ownership, as well as what peace of mind you get out of having a warranty.

A ton is an expression. If you notice in my original post, I said I followed by a (we). I have bought vehicles for me, my wife and daughter. It's really easy to buy ten vehicles in less time. After looking at my purchases, I guess we do average a new vehicle every 3 years.

Your assumptions are wrong. I keep my vehicles longer than you think. Here is an example of the last 6 ones we've bought. So my Ram is in it's 6th year, I've had the vette 8 years (it's 13 years old), I kept the Infinity 10 years and kept the Sierra for 10 years.

1) 2013 Toyota Plug in Prius (new) - has been flawless
2) 2009 Ram Pickup (new) - now at 90k miles, minor issues covered under warranty, plan to keep it another 3-4 years
3) 2007 bought a 2002 Corvette (used) from dealership with low miles - they really pressured me to buy the warranty - I said no! It's now 12 years old, never has had a problem. My weekend driver now has 75k miles
4) 2003 Infinity G35 (new) - kept it till 2013, sold it with 97k miles to get the Prius. Never had a problem
5) 2000 GMC Sierra (bought new on Dec 1999) -Kept it end of 2009, traded it in with 134k miles. one repair to the steering rack for about $1K
6) 1997 Chevy Tahoe (new) - Kept if for 6 years, too impractical for my wife, sold it and got the Infinity
2003 Infinity G35 -
