Default 2500 hemi reliability

I did a search on this and saw a couple of threads, but not a lot of info.

I'm thinking of trading in my 07 qc 4x4 1500 hemi for either a ford or dodge 3/4 ton 4x4. Looking at 2012-2014.

I'm sure the hemi is still reliable but I'm wondering about other issues. Front end problems, tranny, electronic...anything. Just wondering what's out there, if anything, I need to be aware of?

This truck will stay stock, no programmer, no cai, no exhaust mods. Synth oil is as crazy as I'll get.

imo 3/4 tons are better built and have fewer repairs. the entire truck is built with beefier, stronger components. As long as the new truck is not the first year of a new generation...usually those have a few bugs.

As stated, the Hemi reliability is proven.

If you can swing the $$$, Seriously look at a 2014 3/4 ton. For 2014 the 2500 got the same 50,000 psi frame the duallies received in 2013. Also the suspension was completely changed. The front end is now basically a clone of Ford Superduty trucks, being a 3 link coil system. Five link coils are in the rear.

I first looked into selling my '04 in 2012 to purchase a new CTD 2500, but decided to wait on the new frame and suspension upgrades in 2014. Best move I coulda made, unloaded or loaded, it drives better than my '04 IFS 1500.

Another plus with the 2014, is you'll have the option of the 5.7 HEMI or the more powerful 6.4 Hemi...

Thanks for the info on the 2014, didn't know about the front end and frame. I'd really like to compare a 6.4 to Fords 6.2.

Is it correct that all the Hemis now have the MDS? Not thrilled about that, doesn't seem to have done any good on my current truck.

2500 5.7 Hemi is VVT but not MDS, never has been. New 6.4 is MDS, as well as VVT, but can be locked out by driver without the need of an aftermarket tuner.

I wouldn't trust a Ford diesel that doesn't have a displacement of 7.3, even their own 6.7 is having issues. Not really a big fan of the Eco boost but the 6.2 V8 is pretty reliable. Although if I was buying used without warranty, I'm not a fan of working on overhead cam engines. Good old push rods like the Hemi are a lot faster and easier to work on...

TheFist,

A 3/4 ton 4X4 Ram pickup certainly wouldn't disappoint.
Take a look around your local Ram dealers for any certified pre-owned trucks.
At least with certified pre-owned, you stand a better chance of having a full maintenance history of the vehicle before you buy plus it goes off the lot ready to roll.
Best of luck on your search!

I have been looking around for a 2500 Something..USED

thanks for the information on the frame and front end changes...

I can add on the Ford Gas 6.2L.. the overhead cam engines are Chain Drive... and does not have a mandatory replacement miles... like Belt drive systems in cars...

and Ford does not have the support LIKE THIS PLACE DOES for Dodge.. WOW.

Dont buy any old dodge 2500 prior to 2014.

HEMI is out standing, how ever 16 spark plugs dont last long due to them being copper..

The rust of the dodge is a problem, fractured drag link y style...recalls on the replacement T style....

My 06 2500 hemi...front end drive line issues...typical dodge querks...i have spentvsome$$$$$$ in after market partts to fix or repair..

The 6.4 hemi is kinda ok, Im a die hard 6sp manual fan, dodges auto did not impress me.

Ford or GM are a much better 2500 truck but Hemi is by far the better gas engine than the gas V10 or GM 6.0

Im no longer loyal to any brand and it sucks that all use non servicable ball joints and u joints..

I have never owned a good dodge,Ford, Or GM...so...my Jaded thoughts are not winning any one over.

Hmmm. That's not indicative of most Canadian pickup truck owners. Ever think maybe, just maybe it's not the vehicles?

According to R.L. Polk, the leading independent automotive information provider, most HD pickups built since 1993 by all three auto makers are still registered, on the road in Canada.

The numbers are: Dodge/Ram - 79%, GM/Chevrolet - 72%, Ford - 66%.

In looking at just diesel trucks, the numbers are even stronger: Dodge/Ram - 87%, GM/Chevy - 81%, Ford - 69%.

THE LEAST RELIABLE HD PICKUP still has almost 7 out of every ten trucks built in the last 20+ years still on the road. You can look it up...

u-joints not greaseble....ball joints pitman, idler arms outer tie rod ends all greaseable on gm 2500 series. the problem is to few lube kids actually grease them during a lof service.
