I figured it would help with break-in and I could see how it would do on a long trip. I had recently dropped in the K&N filter and noticed what seemed to be about a 1 MPG to 1.5 MPG improvement based on the computor, going from about 12.5 to 13.5 in town(3.92s out back). My truck has the 32 gallon gas tank option and I made it to Phoenix on one tank, albeit with the little gas pump alarm on and 30 miles to end of tank on the display. The highest MPG observed via the computor was 17.9 going there. During the course of my visit, my son told me my truck sounded kinda wimpy and I should consider a cat back. He knows a guy that does really good work for a reasonable amount so off we went. I went with a 14" Magnaflow and just replaced the factory muffler and kept the rest. Incidently when we were looking at the monstrous stock muffler the back 1/3 was browned from heat already and you could not see through it. The Magnaflow you can see through and of course the truck now has a nice little rumble...lol Anyway, I really wanted to see what the milage was going to do. I immediatly noticed the computor was hovering between 14 and 15.5 range in town. On my return trip I decided to do a little experiment. There is probably a good 150 miles of rather straight and level hi-way on the trip, so I set the cruise initially at 65 and reset the computer and noted the mileage. After about 10-12 miles it had settled out at 20.5 and stayed there for the 20 miles or so before the next step in my test. I then went up to 70 and reset the computor again and took note. Again after about 10 or so miles it settled out at about 19.3. At about this point there is a stretch of the I-8 that is a 75 zone so I set it there and was surprised to see 18.4! Repeating my method at 80 I got 17.2. When I arrived in San Diego I noticed I was still at a quarter of a tank and the display said 152 miles to end of tank!! Needless to say I am stoked! I have a total of 200 bucks in the exhaust and filter and just turned over 2K miles at the end of the trip. Obviously weather, road conditions, etc. will play a factor, but I am very pleased and just love this freakin truck!!! Oh yeah and the extra power is nice too! I am getting a real kick trying to stay in the MDS mode and see what I can eeck out of this thing. If you haven't done these mods I highly recommend it, they will pay for themselves in the long haul, assuming you can keep your foot out of it! LOL Actually I had a goof ball in a Murano mess with me. Don't know what those have in them, but it had dual tail pipes. Of course after we stabbed the throttle he only saw mine! LOL Peace! ROCKER
LOL! Good read, very descriptive and motivating to people such as myself into buying a new Ram!

Ok, was finally able to take a hwy trip to Houston this weekend with just the truck, my wife and myself, no trailer full of 4 wheelers.

2009
Sport Crew 4x2
5.7l Hemi w/3.92 axle
89 octane
Truck is stock, no aftermarket anything on it (Yet)
For this trip 90% hwy, 10% city driving

Since the milage computer calculates the average miles per gallon whether it's hwy or city, total trip from the time I left until we got home averaged 17.9 mpg. At one point on the way home it was reading 18.3 mpg. I have not yet done manual calculations, only going by the onboard computer. If the manual calcs show that I truely am close to 18mpg avg then I will be very happy with the truck. Jeff.

Just a bit of advice, if people are able to calculate the mpg manually, I would suggest doing so and comparing that to the computer readout. On my last tank the computer readout was over 1mpg higher than my actual mpg when calculated manually. The computer avg said 15.5 (I reset the computer when I filled up) and the actual mpg was 14.3. Which brings another point, if people aren't resetting the computer when they fill up the tank, the computer isn't providing an accurate number for that tank of gas. It's taking an average of what you have been getting since the last reset. So just keep that in mind when you see all these numbers where people only listed the computer's reading. Take them with a grain of salt. The most accurate # will always be the one calculated manually.

That's why the computer reads as average mpg. The only true way to messure mpg is to use an external tank that only holds exactly 1 gallon of gas. Drive until the engine dies and at the point the engine quits that is your mpg. Even doing manual calculations won't give you and exact messurement because you will never fill the tank to the same point as the before. A little more or a little less but very rare you will get it to be the same. Jeff.
