Default Bakflip HD - not so HD

For anyone considering paying the extra money for the Bakflip HD, I'm not sure that I would make that mistake again. The standard BakFlip has plastic panels, while the HD has thin aluminum panels.

Had a minor hailstorm - pea to less than marble sized hail, no damage to the truck or any other car in the parking lot. The BakFlip looks like someone took a hammer to it. I'm hoping that some dry ice will pull the dents out, but I'm less than impressed with how "Heavy Duty" it is. I suspect that the plastic panels would not have been effected by the tiny hailstones.

That sucks, and your right the plastic probably would have been fine since it has more flex. So far I am happy with mine still.

Just tell everyone it is designed to have aerodynamics similar to a golf ball.

Sorry, I shouldn't be joking. That does suck. I thought long and hard about the HD, but just couldn't afford it.

Maybe if I'm lucky it'll hail again and even out the pattern

Did you contact them? I'd be interested to hear what they had to say.

Actually, I was thinking along the lines of: "Hey guys, I purchased the HD version for my truck. We had a hailstorm recently and it is now dented in several areas. I was curious, is this expected and or common? Does this happen with the plastic version? Is there a warranty? Can I exchange it for the plastic one?

What harm can come from at least letting them know?

But yes, if you called them and just said "Hey, aluminum dents." That would be funny.

Thanks for posting the info btw. I'm hoping to get one for my truck very soon and will likely get the plastic version now.

I sent them an email, but I'm not expecting much. I'm starting to wish that I would have bought the Diamondback SE tonneau now.

Got a response back asking for some pictures. I'll have to see what happens from there. basically I had just told them how it got dented, that I was disappointed in how easily it dented and asking what the recommended repair procedure was.

it should be replaced IMO. You payed extra for the HD and so you should get HD. Tiny hail should not be denting something thats designed to be outside in the elements and has a label of "HD"
